Death among the Altai Turks (Book)

Death among the Altai Turks is the Turkish translation of a 1963 work by French Turkologist Jean-Paul Roux. Published in November 2023 by Dergâh Yayınları as part of its History series, the book offers a comprehensive analysis of the Altai peoples’ conceptions of death and their death practices.

The book examines how death is understood in Altai societies and the social functions of beliefs and rituals surrounding death. Roux emphasizes that death is not perceived as annihilation, as in modern societies, but rather as a transition to a different mode of existence. Death is addressed in relation to the individual’s life, the continuity of the soul, and social solidarity. The text is structured around three main themes: death, the soul, and funeral rites.

• Ritual and Sociality: Death is presented not merely as an individual loss but as a social ritual of reintegration.
• Belief in the Soul: The transition of the deceased person’s soul to another realm or form of existence is analyzed.
• Ritual Practices: Burial structures, funeral ceremonies, and the role of the community during these processes are described.

Roux synthesizes anthropological, historical, and archaeological data using an academic tone. The book is notable for its ethnographic examples and ritual analyses. The author systematically and critically reveals the meaning of death for the Altai peoples.
