Dikmen Plateau

Dikmen Plateau is located in the Hendek district of Sakarya Province, in the eastern part of the Marmara Region. It stands at an elevation of approximately 1,722 meters. Situated in the eastern part of Sakarya near the Bolu border, the plateau is an extension of the Samanlı Mountains range. Known for its wide plains and forest cover, the area is ecologically rich, surrounded by pine, beech, and oak forests.

Climate Characteristics

The plateau has a microclimatic structure with transitional features between the Marmara and Black Sea climate zones. Summers are cool and humid, while winters are snowy. These climatic conditions make the plateau a preferred location for both human settlement and agricultural and livestock activities.

Cultural and Social Activities

Dikmen Plateau is one of the traditional highland areas where local communities continue age-old transhumance practices. The Dikmen Plateau Festival, held especially in the summer months, is one of the region’s most well-known cultural events. These festivals feature traditional folk dances, local foods, concerts, and various sports competitions, attracting visitors from both within Sakarya and neighboring provinces.

Transportation and Tourism

The plateau is accessible via a road approximately 35–40 kilometers from the Hendek town center. While most of the road is paved, the final section consists of a gravel path. The plateau is a popular destination for nature activities such as hiking, camping, photography, and ATV sports, especially on weekends and during the summer. Although accommodation is limited, there are small businesses available to meet the basic needs of day visitors.

Outdoor Activities and Nature Sports

Thanks to its natural topography, vegetation, and climate, Dikmen Plateau is suitable for a wide range of nature-based activities. These activities, integrated with the plateau's cultural heritage, attract both individual and group-oriented outdoor enthusiasts.

• Hiking (Trekking): The plateau offers ideal routes for hikers with both flat plains and forested, sloped trails. The gravel road from Hendek to the plateau and the surrounding forest paths are frequently used for hiking, nature observation, wildlife tracking, and photography.
• Mountain Biking: The roads leading to the plateau and surrounding trails are suitable for cycling, making the area particularly attractive for amateur and professional mountain bikers in summer. Biking at high altitudes also contributes to physical endurance.
• Camping and Caravanning: The wide plains of the plateau are very suitable for tent camping. Due to limited infrastructure such as electricity and water, the area is mostly preferred by experienced campers seeking solitude in nature. There are also suitable spots for caravan camping.
• ATV and Off-road: The access roads and surrounding terrains are well-suited for off-road vehicles (ATVs and 4x4s). Tours organized by local groups and off-road clubs from outside the city help promote the plateau.
• Winter Sports (Seasonal): Due to its elevation, the plateau is covered with snow in winter, allowing for sledding and amateur-level snow hiking. However, there is currently no infrastructure for ski slopes or snowmobile services.

Ecological and Economic Importance

The plateau hosts a rich biodiversity in terms of flora and fauna. Both small-scale and large-scale livestock farming are practiced, and the pasturelands of the plateau are used for grazing. Beekeeping is also widespread, and natural products known as plateau honey are sold in local markets.
