Aydın Doğu Demirkol, born on September 6, 1985, in Istanbul, is a Turkish theater, film, and television actor and a comedian. Known for his unique style on Turkey’s comedy scene, Demirkol is recognized for his talent in performing arts.
Aydın Doğu Demirkol was born on September 6, 1985, in Istanbul. He graduated from Istanbul University with a degree in Computer Engineering and continued his postgraduate studies, though, as he stated, he has yet to submit his thesis. Despite his engineering background, he chose to build his career in comedy and acting. This decision reflects his determination to follow his passion, even in the face of criticism from those around him.
Demirkol's interest in comedy dates back to his childhood. When a family elder once asked him, “Why are you chasing after these odd things when you have a solid profession?”, his response made his passion clear:
"I studied computer engineering for four years (it took an extra 1.5 years, but let’s keep that between us…), but my work, my thoughts, and my dedication to comedy have been ongoing for as long as I can remember. It’s not something I just finished and left behind after school. Whether walking on the street, lying in bed at night, or pretending to listen to someone’s passionate story, a significant part of my day is spent thinking about comedy."
He has performed stand-up comedy for about three years, stating that he has yet to reach the 10,000-hour mastery threshold and that his learning process is ongoing.
Demirkol took his first major career step by participating in Yetenek Sizsiniz Türkiye (Turkey’s Got Talent) in 2009. Although he faced disappointment there, he did not give up. Later, he gained stage experience through Open Mic performances at BKM. His real breakthrough came in 2018 when he played the character Sinan Karasu in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s award-winning film Ahlat Ağacı (The Wild Pear Tree). With this role, he proved his acting skills to a broad audience. That same year, he played Zafer in Ölümlü Dünya (Mortal World), delivering a performance that blended comedy with drama.
In his film career, Doğu Demirkol starred in Bayi Toplantısı (Dealer Meeting) (2020), Ölümlü Dünya 2 (Mortal World 2) (2023), and Yaşam Koçu (Life Coach) (2024). On television, he portrayed Tarık Şakrak in the series Tutunamayanlar (The Disconnected) (2020). In digital streaming platforms, he took on both the leading role and the scriptwriting duties for Doğu (Doğu) since 2021.
He has also been featured in various television programs, appearing as a guest or jury member in Güldür Güldür Show, O Ses Türkiye (The Voice Turkey), and Maske Kimsin Sen? (The Masked Singer).
Demirkol collaborated with brands such as Garanti BBVA, Turkcell, and Garanti Emeklilik in the advertising industry. In 2021, he ventured into music with the single Tekrar (Again), a collaboration with Mustafa Sandal. On stage, he performed in theater productions such as Eski Açık (Old Open) and Doğu Demirkol Stand-Up.
His success has been recognized with awards, including Best Actor for Ahlat Ağacı at the 51st SİYAD Awards in 2019 and Comedian of the Year from GQ Turkey in 2021. Expressing his perseverance, Demirkol once said, “A thousand people booed me, but I didn’t give up.” He continues to advance his career with new projects.
