Epoxy primer is a two-component (resin + hardener) coating type that provides high adhesion and chemical resistance. It offers strong surface preparation for metal, concrete, epoxy floor systems, and industrial paints. It works in full compatibility with epoxy-based paints and coatings and offers high resistance against external influences such as corrosion, chemicals, and abrasion.

Chemical and Physical Properties

Epoxy primers contain epoxy resin as the main component and hardeners such as polyamide, amine, or adduct. After application, they cure through a chemical reaction, forming a strong, bonding, and chemical-resistant film on the surface.

Drying time varies depending on ambient temperature, film thickness, and the resin system used. Typically, surface dry is achieved within 2–4 hours, while full cure occurs between 12–24 hours.

Application Surfaces

  • Interior and exterior concrete surfaces
  • Industrial floors and warehouse areas
  • Metal structural elements (steel, iron)
  • Ship hulls, water tanks, and piping systems
  • Surfaces requiring primer before epoxy coating

Application Process

  1. Surface preparation: Dust, oil, rust, and loose particles must be removed; the surface must be dry and clean.
  2. Mixing: The epoxy primer is prepared by mixing the resin and hardener components according to the manufacturer’s ratio (e.g., 2:1, 4:1).
  3. Application: It can be applied using a roller, brush, or spray gun. A waiting period of 2–6 hours between coats is recommended.
  4. Drying and curing: Surface dry is achieved in 2–4 hours depending on surface temperature, and full cure takes 12–24 hours.

Advantages

  • High adhesion performance on concrete and metal surfaces
  • High resistance to chemicals such as acids, alkalis, solvents, and saltwater
  • Surface protection against mechanical impact and abrasion
  • Can be easily topcoated with epoxy, polyurethane, and acrylic systems
  • Provides long-lasting floor and surface preparation

Limitations

  • Must be used within a specific time after mixing (pot life)
  • Application temperature should not fall below 10 °C
  • Area must be well ventilated; mask and gloves are recommended for solvent-based types
  • Rapid curing at high temperatures may cause cracking
