Evren (District)

Evren is a district in Türkiye’s Central Anatolia Region, affiliated with Ankara. Located approximately 178 kilometers from the city center of Ankara, Evren lies in the southeastern part of the province along the banks of the Kızılırmak River. To the east and north of the district lies the Kızılırmak River, to the west lies Şereflikoçhisar, and to the south lies the Sarıyahşi district of Aksaray. With an area of approximately 218 km², Evren is one of Ankara’s smallest districts by surface area.

History

The history of Evren district dates back to very ancient periods. Research conducted in the region indicates that settlement extends as far back as the Hittite era. The district’s known former name was Çıkınağıl, which in Old Turkish meant “scattered settlement” or “dispersed cluster of houses.” During the Ottoman period, Çıkınağıl was a village, and from the 16th century onward, Muslim Turkish populations began settling there. In 1983, the village was renamed Evren in honor of the then President of the Republic, Kenan Evren. It attained district status under the name Evren in 1990, and its first district governor was appointed on 02.08.1991.

Geography and Climate

The elevation of Evren district is approximately 900 meters. The geography of the district is characterized by the flat and undulating terrain typical of Central Anatolia. The influence of the Hirfanlı Dam Lake has led to increased humidity in certain areas and observable microclimatic variations. The Kızılırmak River plays a vital role in both agricultural irrigation and natural ecosystems.

The climate exhibits the typical continental characteristics of Central Anatolia: hot and dry summers, and cold, snowy winters.

Population and Demographic Structure

According to the latest data from the Evren Subprovince Office, the total population of Evren district is 3,045. With this figure, Evren is the least populous district in Ankara. The majority of the population resides in the district center, while surrounding villages and neighborhoods show low population density. The district includes 13 neighborhoods. Due to migration, the proportion of young people has declined, and the average age has increased in rural areas.

Economy

The economy of Evren is largely based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Major agricultural products include wheat, barley, chickpeas, and lentils. The Kızılırmak River and Hirfanlı Dam Lake provide advantages for irrigation, contributing significantly to agricultural development. Small-scale livestock farming and poultry raising are also widespread in the district. Additionally, limited-scale fishing is practiced around Hirfanlı Dam Lake. In recent years, production of local products such as grape molasses, tomato paste, and homemade noodles has gained economic value in response to growing demand for natural and handmade goods.

Tourism, Culture and Cuisine

Evren has potential for nature tourism due to its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. The area surrounding the Hirfanlı Dam Lake is suitable for birdwatching and nature walks. Traditional Central Anatolian culture is actively preserved in the district. Wedding customs, folk dances, and handicrafts are important elements of social life.

Evren cuisine offers regional specialties such as tarhana soup, keşkek, meat and vegetable dishes, and tandır kebab. Additionally, homemade grape molasses, walnut-stuffed sausage, and homemade noodles hold significant importance both for household consumption and in local markets.
