Gözne Castle is a medieval fortress located on steep rocky cliffs at an elevation of 1085 to 1400 meters in the village of Gözne approximately 29 to 30 kilometers north of Mersin place. Comprising two distinct structures castle it attracts attention due to its location and architectural features. It lies along the route leading to Çandır Castle and served as part of a defensive network alongside Belenkeşlik Castle on Soğucak Yaylası and Sinap Castle on Ayvagediği Yaylası together police station. Architectural Structure

Eastern Structure

The eastern section of the castle is rectangular in form and features four towers. One tower is located on the south side and three on the north side although some sources describe one tower on the east and three on the south. The entrance is on the west and the threshold is approximately one meter above the ground level. The interior of the structure is divided into four separate compartments by three arches and is covered by pointed barrel vaults. A total of five openings provide lighting and ventilation two on the north walls and three on the south walls.

Western Structure

The western structure is a hexagonal tower with three windows and two doors. Its upper section features fifteen merlons distributed along the south west and north sides. The ceiling is divided into two sections by a curved arch that rises from the floor to the roof. The western portion of the ceiling consists of three distinct triangular surfaces while the eastern part was constructed using the pointed arch technique vault.

Origins and Dating

Gözne Castle is dated to the medieval period. Some sources speculate that Romans once inhabited the region and suggest the castle may have been built on earlier Roman foundations; however this claim lacks definitive evidence.
