Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi

Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi is known as a figure who lived in the Ottoman Empire during the 17th century. Information about him is limited and largely based on Evliya Çelebi’s work titled Seyahatnâme. The term “Hezârfen” in his name means “a person engaged in many sciences.” He is best known for the account that he flew from the Galata Tower using wings he had constructed himself.

There is no definitive information regarding Ahmed Çelebi’s birth year, family, or education. However, it is understood that he lived within the Ottoman territories and showed interest in the scientific topics of his time. It is likely that he received a classical education. He is assumed to have adopted an observation-based method of inquiry.


🪂 Account of the Flight Attempt

According to Evliya Çelebi, Ahmed Çelebi studied the movements of birds and constructed his own wings from wood and fabric. He jumped from the Galata Tower in Istanbul and, with the aid of the wind, crossed the Bosphorus and landed in the Doğancılar neighborhood of Üsküdar.

No written work by Ahmed Çelebi has survived to the present day. However, from the accounts about him, it is evident that he followed an observation-based method. He studied the flight mechanisms of birds and attempted to design experimental devices.
