Attouda Ancient City is an ancient settlement located within the boundaries of Hisar Village in the Sarayköy district of Denizli Province, Türkiye. Strategically positioned between the ancient regions of Phrygia and Caria, the city became one of the significant urban centers during the Lydian Kingdom and later under the Roman Empire. Attouda is situated on a dominant hilltop in the local topography, near the present-day village of Hisar.

Historical Background

The history of Attouda Ancient City extends as far back as the 2nd century BCE, and it remained inhabited through the Hellenistic period into the Roman era. Although rarely mentioned in ancient sources, Attouda attained municipal status during the Roman Empire, sufficient to issue its own coinage. The coins minted in the city commonly feature symbols of Asclepius, the god of health, indicating the presence of a belief system centered on healing cults.
