Hoynat Island is located within the boundaries of Ramazan Village, Perşembe District, Ordu Province, in Türkiye’s Black Sea Region. It is a small rocky island situated very close to the coast, immediately next to the Hoynat Tunnel on the Black Sea coastal road.

History and Archaeological Significance

It is believed that Hoynat Island was historically used by sailors as a storage site and shelter. Small remnants of a wall and a water cistern are present on the island. These remains indicate that the island may have been used for historical and military purposes. Consequently, Hoynat Island was officially registered as a Class II archaeological site in 2004 by the Samsun Council for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage (KTVKK).

Natural Life and Ecological Features

Hoynat Island provides habitat for various species of wildlife, particularly birds. It is recorded as the only location in Türkiye where the European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) nests and breeds. Additionally, the herring gull (Larus argentatus) and other cormorant species have been observed on the island. For this reason, the island is considered an important site for birdwatching and is locally referred to as a “bird paradise.”

Tourism and Visitor Infrastructure

Hoynat Island is regarded as an important stop for cultural and nature tourism, and local authorities are implementing projects to develop its potential. The Ordu Metropolitan Municipality has constructed viewing and resting areas on the opposite shore of the island. As part of the project, walking paths, granite and basalt paving, observation terraces, binocular-equipped birdwatching points, parking areas, mobile snack kiosks, and picnic tables have been installed. Wooden steps have also been placed to facilitate access to sea level.

Access

Hoynat Island has no direct land connection; however, it is located very close to the shore and is clearly visible from the coastal road. Access to the island within the boundaries of Perşembe District is easily facilitated by an asphalt road. Its proximity to the Hoynat Tunnel ensures high accessibility.

Protection Status

Hoynat Island is under protection due to its archaeological remains and rare bird species. It was designated as a Class II archaeological site in 2004. Various environmental regulations and planning measures are ongoing to preserve its ecological and cultural values.
