The Hz. Miktad Mosque, also known as the Muğdat Mosque, is located in the Muğdat Neighborhood of the Yenişehir District in Türkiye’s Mersin Province, place. It is considered the second largest mosque built during the Republican Era, after the Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara, and is a multifunctional religious and social structure important. As Mersin’s largest mosque, it derives its name from Mikdād ibn Amr, one of the earliest companions of Islam. The Hz. Miktad Mosque is a complex structure comprising a two-story prayer hall, community space, main dome, the final congregation area, and a mahfil level. The interior can accommodate 6,000 worshippers, and with the addition of external courtyards at the front and rear, the total capacity reaches 10,000 people together. One of the most striking architectural features is its six minarets, each reaching a height of 91 meters and featuring three balconies. This architectural feature imparts a silhouette reminiscent of the Ahmed Mosque and enhances the overall grandeur of the building. Both the interior and exterior space design reflect clear influences of the Ottoman style.
Designed not merely as a place of worship but as a külliye, the Hz. Miktad Mosque includes a conference hall, library, a soup kitchen, a guesthouse, a health center, and a mourning house like, housing various social units. Through these features, the mosque fulfills not only a religious function but also a significant social and cultural center role.
Construction of the Hz. Miktad Mosque began in 1987 and was completed after a five-year process, opening for worship in 1992. Located in the Yenişehir District of Mersin, the mosque retained its importance following the district’s official establishment by Law No. 5747, published in the Official Gazette on 22 August 2008 under No. 26824. Situated at the center of the district, the Hz. Miktad Mosque holds a vital position in Yenişehir’s religious and cultural fabric due to both its location and functionality.
In the mosque’s courtyard stands a tomb attributed to Hz. Mikdād ibn Amr, one of the earliest companions to embrace Islam. According to some sources, this companion is also referred to as “Mikdād b. Aswad” due to an adoptive relationship. He was among the first to accept Islam during the Mecca period. Hz. Muhammad participated with him in major battles such as Badr, Uhud, the Trench, and Hayber, serving among his standard-bearers and elite archers. Although it is reported that he was martyred in an intense battle, there is a strong local belief people that his grave lies in this region. Although the tomb is formally regarded as a musical mode, the local community accepts that Hz. Mikdād was martyred in this area and that his grave was constructed within the mosque grounds.
The Hz. Miktad Mosque is situated in the Muğdat Neighborhood of Yenişehir, one of Mersin’s four central districts. Yenişehir is bordered by Mezitli to the west, the Mediterranean to the east, and Toroslar to the northeast and is the largest district among the central districts by area. At the same time, the district, distinguished by its cultural, sports, and educational infrastructure, is home to a young population with higher income levels house. As of 2023, the district’s population is 277,445 (female: 144,641, male: 132,804). There are a total of 54 mosques, 24 Quran course, and 2 cem houses in the district, with no non-Muslim places of worship. Among these religious structures, the Hz. Miktad Mosque stands out in terms of size and functionality.
The Hz. Miktad Mosque is not merely a place of worship but a multifunctional center contributing to the social and cultural life of the Yenişehir District. It hosts educational activities through its conference hall and library, social assistance services via its soup kitchen and guesthouse, and public health initiatives through its health center. The presence of institutions such as the Mersin Governorship, the Provincial Security Directorate, Mersin and Toros Universities, as well as social venues like the Forum Shopping Center and Kültür Park within Yenişehir’s boundaries further enhances the strategic importance of the district and, by extension, the mosque.
The Hz. Miktad Mosque holds a prominent place among Türkiye’s significant religious structures. Built between 1987 and 1992, it draws attention through its aesthetic interpretation of Ottoman architecture, the tomb honoring Hz. Mikdād, and its külliye layout. With its architectural, religious, social, and cultural functions, it has become one of the symbolic structures of the Yenişehir District.
