Kayabaşı Yaylası

Kayabaşı Yaylası is a highland pasture located within the boundaries of Akçaabat district in Trabzon Province, where various seasonal activities are carried out as part of the Eastern Black Sea transhumance culture. It can be described as one of the characteristic highlands of the region based on its historical use, geographical structure, and contemporary seasonal functions.

Geographical Location and Natural Features

Kayabaşı Yaylası is situated approximately 40 kilometers from the center of Akçaabat district at an elevation of 1,850 meters above sea level. Its topography consists of sloping slopes, grassy areas, and sparse forested zones. The pasture lies within the high-altitude plateau regions of the Eastern Black Sea and exhibits microclimatic conditions alongside neighboring highlands.

Historical and Cultural Use

Since antiquity, the local population has used the pasture during the summer months for nomadic livestock husbandry and temporary settlement. Seasonal cycles of life are accompanied by agricultural and pastoral activities such as hay harvesting, winter preparation, and animal grazing. Women have been observed playing an active role in hay cutting and stacking the collected grasses for winter use.

Structures and Settlement Characteristics

The structures on Kayabaşı Yaylası are constructed from traditional materials such as stone and wood, reflecting the region’s pastoral architecture. Settlements are designed for temporary accommodation, with limited permanent infrastructure across the pasture. Dwellings are adapted to external environmental factors such as wind and rainfall and follow a slope-based settlement pattern.

Climate and Seasonal Conditions

Heavy snowfall is observed during winter months, with snow cover persisting on the ground for extended periods. In summer, cool climatic conditions prevail. This pattern enables the pasture to be utilized during summer months with a temporary increase in population. During spring and summer, the natural landscape becomes densely vegetated and blooms with wildflowers.

Access and Tourism

Access to the pasture is provided via road networks, with specific routes leading from the center of Akçaabat district toward the highland. The condition of the road varies according to seasonal weather. Aside from temporary dwellings used by the local population, there is no tourism infrastructure on the pasture. Visits are typically day trips or seasonal in nature.
