Kayserispor was officially established on 1 July 1966. The club’s colors are red and yellow. In its early years Kayserispor competed in the Turkish Second League (now TFF 1. Lig) and was promoted for the first time in its history to the Turkish First League (now Süper Lig) in the 1973–74 season. The club has experienced periods of promotion and relegation between the top flight and lower divisions. Its longest continuous Süper Lig participation spanned the period from 2004 to 2024.
Throughout its history Kayserispor has undergone occasional administrative changes and mergers with Kayseri Erciyesspor and restructured its institutional framework in 2004 to reestablish its position in the league system.
Kayserispor made its first international tournament appearance following its victory in the 2006 Turkish Cup which qualified it for the UEFA Cup (now UEFA Europa League). The club participated in the UEFA Cup and the Intertoto Cup during the 2006–07 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons. In 2006 it reached the semifinals of the Intertoto Cup. Its best performance in the UEFA Cup came in the 2006–07 season when it advanced to the second round.
The club plays its home matches at the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Kadir Has Stadium. Opened in 2009 the stadium was built to UEFA standards and has a capacity of 32864 spectators. It is a modern facility capable of hosting all of the club’s matches including European competitions. The club’s training center and youth development facilities are also located within this complex.
Kayserispor is managed under a presidential system. In the past Berna Gözbaşı served as president and became the first woman to lead a Süper Lig club. Various individuals including Hikmet Karaman Tolunay Kafkas and Çağdaş Atan have held the position of head coach at different times.
The club participates in the U14 U15 U16 U17 and U19 leagues organized by the Turkish Football Federation. A transition system connects these youth teams with the senior squad and promising young players are occasionally promoted to the professional roster. Notable players developed through Kayserispor’s youth system include Nurettin Yıldız Hasan Ali Kaldırım and Emre Demir.
Kayserispor’s longest uninterrupted Süper Lig tenure lasted from 2004 to 2024. It finished fifth in the 2007–08 season earning qualification for European competitions. In 2007 it won the Turkish Cup for the first time in its history by defeating Gençlerbirliği on penalties in the final. That same year it competed in the Turkish Super Cup final against Fenerbahçe but did not win the trophy. In the 2021–22 season the club reached the semifinals of the Turkish Cup.
Kayserispor prioritizes investment in local young players while occasionally strengthening its squad with well-known foreign footballers. A key transfer strategy involves targeting players with low transfer fees or those on free transfers. In the past the club has brought in players with experience in European leagues to enhance sporting quality and visibility.
In this context players such as Manuel Fernandes (a Portuguese midfielder known for his stints at Beşiktaş and Lokomotiv Moscow) Asamoah Gyan (a Ghana international with Premier League experience) Pierre Webó Franco Cangele Welliton Diego Biseswar and Deniz Türüç have worn the Kayserispor jersey. Notably Mehmet Topuz’s high-profile transfer to Fenerbahçe in 2009 was an economically significant development in the club’s history.
Kayserispor is the most established sports representative of the city of Kayseri. As one of the prominent Süper Lig clubs in Central Anatolia it maintains a strong regional identity. Its supporter group is known as Kapalı Kale. The club operates as an institution that provides sporting opportunities for the city’s youth and continues its mission of developing football talent through its youth academy.
