Kız Kalesi (Rize)

Located on a small peninsula situated on a rocky terrain near the coast, west of the Pazar district center in Rize province. The castle is currently disconnected from the mainland.

History

The exact construction date of Kız Kalesi is unknown. However, it is believed to have been in use during the 13th or 14th centuries. There are traditions suggesting it was built during the Genoese period. It is also known that the castle was used during the Ottoman period.

Architectural Features

Kız Kalesi has a square plan and was constructed using precisely cut stone. The regular stonework on its walls is particularly striking. The entrance is located on the western facade and features round-arched machicolation windows. The structure primarily served as an observation tower.

Current Condition and Significance

Today, only a single observation tower remains standing from the original castle. Damaged sections have been restored in accordance with their original form and integrated into regional tourism.
