Lake Karataş

Karataş Lake is a natural freshwater lake located within the borders of the Karamanlı district of Burdur province, in the Mediterranean Region of Türkiye. Situated near the district center, the lake largely preserves its natural character. It is one of the significant wetlands of Burdur and forms a meaningful natural system for the region in both ecological and environmental terms.

The surroundings of Karataş Lake are covered with reeds and marshes. These areas provide shelter and resting spots for migratory birds, especially during spring and autumn migrations, making the lake attractive for bird watchers and nature photographers. This feature contributes to the ecological value of wetlands in the Burdur region.

In recent years, Karataş Lake has been heavily affected by environmental changes and has entered a serious drying phase. As of 2021, it was reported that the lake had almost completely dried up. According to Anadolu Agency, the water level has dropped significantly, and the bird population has declined. This situation is associated with climate change, reduced rainfall, evaporation, and environmental pressures.

In the past, the lake was important for the Karamanlı district and its surroundings in various ways. Its function as a natural resource was indirectly linked by the local population to activities such as agriculture and livestock. Today, due to the risk of drying, these functions have largely been lost. Reviving the lake has become an important agenda item for local administrations and environmental organizations to protect ecological balance and sustain bird migration routes.
