Necropolis Museum

Antalya Necropolis Museum is an open-air museum established for the purpose of preserving and exhibiting the findings obtained as a result of archaeological excavations carried out in the Muratpaşa district of Antalya province, in the East Garage and Ancient Necropolis area.

History

As part of the Eastern Garage Culture and Trade Centre Project launched in 2008 under the leadership of the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, approximately 865 tombs were uncovered as a result of archaeological excavations carried out in the region. These tombs have been dated to the Late Roman-Early Byzantine periods (3rd–7th centuries AD). In line with the nature of the findings in the area, the project was organised as a city museum and opened to visitors in 2010 under the name ‘Necropolis Museum.’

Settlement and Architectural Features

The necropolis area is located on rocky ground. The cemetery area is notable for its mixed structure, with different types of burials used together. Sarcophagi, stone coffin tombs, tile-covered (small sarcophagus-like) tombs and urn-type burials are found together in the area. Some of the tombs are underground, while others are rock tombs.

Architectural structures accompanying the tombs, altars, and findings related to burial ceremonies have also been identified in the area. Stone pavements and wall remains observed around the tombs provide information about the ritual practices in the area.

Findings

During excavations, grave goods such as pottery vessels, glass bottles, bronze mirrors, metal ornaments, coins and bone objects were found inside and around the graves. These findings provide information about the burial customs of the period as well as its material culture.

Exhibition and Preservation

The necropolis area is designed as an open-air museum where the finds are preserved and exhibited in situ. The tombs are covered with glass and accompanied by explanatory panels for visitors. The museum is considered an important example in terms of both archaeological and urban history.

Current Status

The Antalya Necropolis Museum is open to both local and foreign visitors and serves as a cultural stop where archaeological heritage is presented in an integrated manner with urban life. The museum area is equipped with walking paths, information panels, and protective measures.
