Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit

The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is a multi-role strategic stealth bomber developed by the United States with a "flying wing" design. The aircraft's primary mission is to penetrate deep into enemy airspace to deliver conventional and nuclear weapons against high-value targets. Its radar-evading (stealth) capability is the core of its operational profile.

The development of the B-2 Spirit began in the final years of the Cold War, driven by the need for a new-generation bomber that could overcome the Soviet Union's advanced radar and air defense systems. The project, conducted under a high degree of secrecy as part of the "Advanced Technology Bomber" (ATB) program, aimed to create an aircraft that was nearly undetectable by enemy radar. The prototype's maiden flight took place in 1989. The B-2 Spirit entered service with the United States Air Force in 1997. Although 132 units were initially planned for production, the end of the Cold War and the aircraft's high cost limited the production run to just 21. One aircraft from this fleet was lost in an accident. The cost of each B-2, exceeding approximately $2 billion, makes it one of the most expensive military aircraft in the world.

The B-2 Spirit features a number of unique design and technological characteristics integrated to optimize its stealth capabilities:

• Flying Wing Design: The aircraft's most distinctive feature is its "flying wing" design, which lacks vertical or horizontal tail surfaces. The entire aircraft functions aerodynamically as a single wing. This configuration significantly reduces the aircraft's radar cross-section (RCS) and scatters its radar signature.
• Materials and Coatings: The aircraft's structure extensively uses composite materials and special coatings, specifically Radar Absorbent Material (RAM). These materials absorb or redirect incoming radar signals to minimize their reflection.
• Engine Integration: Four General Electric F118-GE-100 turbofan engines are concealed within the fuselage. This integration reduces the engines' heat signature and noise levels, lowering the aircraft's infrared and acoustic detectability. The exhaust gases are also cooled by special systems to mask their thermal signature.
• Weapon Payload and Precision: It has a munition capacity of approximately 18,000 kg (40,000 pounds). It can carry up to 16 JDAMs (Joint Direct Attack Munitions), each weighing 900 kg (2,000 pounds), or up to 36 bombs of the 227 kg (500-pound) class. The aircraft can strike targets with high precision using GPS-guided munitions.
• Range and Refueling: It has an unrefueled range of over 11,000 km (6,000 nautical miles). Its in-flight refueling capability makes this range operationally limitless, providing the B-2 with global reach.
• Crew and Ergonomics: The two-person crew (pilot and mission commander) sit side-by-side. The cockpit is accessed via a door and ladder that open from beneath the nose. For long-duration missions, there is a rest area for the crew, a lavatory, and facilities to heat hot meals.

The B-2 Spirit serves within the United States Air Force's Global Strike Command and is a key component of the U.S.'s strategic nuclear deterrence and conventional strike capabilities. The aircraft's first operational mission was during the 1999 Kosovo War, where it attacked targets over Yugoslavia. It later played an active role in the operations in Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003). It was also used in operations in Libya (2011) and for strikes against targets in Syria in 2017.
