Prof. Dr. Öget Öktem Tanör completed her undergraduate education at the Department of Psychology, Istanbul University, and then pursued graduate studies in psychology and neuropsychology abroad. She specialized in clinical psychology and neuropsychology, becoming recognized as a pioneer of academic research in neuropsychology in Türkiye. Throughout her academic career, she made significant contributions to both clinical practice and the scientific literature, and was also prominent in the struggle for human rights and academic freedom.

As Türkiye’s first neuropsychologist, Tanör established several foundational principles in the field. The Neuropsychology Unit she founded within the Department of Neurology at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine became one of the first institutional centers in Türkiye dedicated to this discipline. Through this unit, she conducted comprehensive studies to adapt and implement neuropsychological tests for the Turkish population. She led the integration of neuropsychological methods into cognitive assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up for neurological disorders.

Tanör’s books and academic articles form foundational texts in the Turkish-language literature on neuropsychology. Her works provide detailed analyses of neuropsychological theories, clinical applications, and assessment methods for cognitive processes. These publications are frequently cited by both academics and clinical practitioners.

Prof. Dr. Tanör is equally recognized for her contributions to social responsibility as for her scientific work. She gained attention for her firm position on fundamental rights such as academic freedom, freedom of expression, and the right to peace. She was one of the signatories of the 2016 Academics for Peace declaration.
