Ortacalar Double Bridges

Ortaçalar Double Bridges are among the most notable examples of Ottoman-era stone bridge architecture. This complex consists of two separate single-arch bridges positioned at right angles to each other, creating a unique architectural arrangement. Built exclusively for pedestrian use, the bridges are constructed from cut stone and mortar, reflecting the engineering principles and aesthetic sensibilities of their time. Within the tradition of stone bridges, these structures stand out for their functionality and structural integrity, carrying significant historical and cultural value.

Location and Physical Characteristics

The Ortaçalar Double Bridges consist of two separate stone arch bridges located within the boundaries of Arhavi district in Artvin province, spanning the Kamilet Valley. The bridges are situated at the confluence of the Kamilet and Durguna streams, positioned perpendicularly to one another.

Each bridge features a single span with a rounded arch. Constructed using cut stone, they represent a regional variant of Ottoman stone bridge architecture in the Black Sea region. The arch spans and surface arrangements reflect the engineering knowledge of the period. The bridges are approximately 35 to 40 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width, designed exclusively for pedestrian use and closed to vehicular traffic.

History

The exact construction date of the bridges is unknown, but they are believed to have been built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Such stone bridges, erected during the Ottoman period, were commonly constructed in mountainous regions to facilitate transportation and connect trade routes. The Double Bridges served this purpose by enabling movement between settlements along the Kamilet Valley.

The Ortaçalar Double Bridges are regarded as a regional interpretation of traditional Ottoman stone bridge architecture. Conservation and Restoration

The bridges are registered as cultural heritage assets by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Over time, the structures had deteriorated and were restored in 2003 by the General Directorate of Highways. During the restoration, the original stone fabric was preserved without altering the historic structure; only reinforcement and cleaning works were carried out.
