Pozantı strawberry is a grape-like fruit, registered with a geographical indication, cultivated in the Pozantı district of Adana Province, belonging to the Albion variety. It is distinguished by its bright red color, symmetrical and conical shape, distinctive aroma, and sweet flavor. Due to the effects of high altitude and low humidity, the fruit flesh is firm and tightly structured, enhancing its transport durability and shelf life.

Morphological Characteristics

Pozantı strawberry is a conical and symmetrical variety possessing the genetic and structural traits specific to the Albion cultivar. Its exterior is dominated by bright red color tones. The fruit flesh is firm and resilient; this structure develops specifically due to the high altitude and low-humidity climatic conditions of Pozantı district. The calyx attachment is very strong, ensuring the fruit maintains its integrity during harvest. Pozantı strawberry is large-fruited, with individual fruit weights ranging from 12 to 30 grams.

The fruit’s flavor profile is characterized by a pronounced aroma and sweetness, attributed to its rich citric acid content. The total sugar content is approximately 3 g/100 g. The soluble dry matter content (Brix value) is at least 9%, reinforcing the fruit’s suitability for processing. Anthocyanin activity, which influences color development, is at least 9 mg/L. Additionally, a citric acid content of 450 mg/100 g or higher contributes significantly to both the flavor profile and shelf life. Pozantı strawberry is also rich in antioxidants, containing approximately 40 mg GAE/100 g of total phenolic compounds.

Growing Environment and Climate Influence

The altitude range of 700–1400 m in Pozantı district, combined with its cool, mild, low-humidity climate, significant day-night temperature variation, and long hours of sunshine, endow the Pozantı strawberry with its unique quality attributes. These climatic conditions increase the fruit’s textural firmness, thereby extending its transport and shelf life. Furthermore, these environmental factors optimize the plant’s balance of citric acid and sugars, enhancing aroma, taste, and durability.

The required chilling period of 400–500 hours for strawberry plants is naturally fulfilled within this geographical area.

Production Process and Agricultural Practices

Pozantı strawberry production is carried out using open-field cultivation. The general production steps are as follows:

  • Orchard establishment: Seedlings with root lengths of 8–10 cm and 2–3 young leaves are planted into the soil. They are spaced 25–30 cm apart in holes made on mulch cover. On average, 3000 seedlings are planted per hectare.
  • Seedling supply: Primary seedlings are obtained annually through runner propagation; the orchard is renewed every four years.
  • Planting schedule: Planting occurs in September–October (autumn), April–May (spring), and June–July (summer). The Pozantı climate allows for autumn planting, enabling earlier fruiting.
  • Flowering and harvest: Fruits mature 30–40 days after initial flowering. Harvest typically begins in May–June and can continue until October.
  • Soil properties: Sandy-loamy soils with high water retention capacity are preferred.
  • Fertilization: Based on soil analysis, 3–4 tons of farmyard manure and 30–35 kg of compost fertilizer are applied per hectare. After flowering, 10 kg of ammonium sulfate per hectare is applied monthly for five months.
  • Pollination: Occurs naturally through bees and wind.
  • Pruning: Conducted in March; regular runner removal is essential to maintain yield.
  • Irrigation: Drip irrigation is preferred. Excessive irrigation increases disease risk.
  • Pest and disease control: Appropriate plant protection products are used. Weed control is achieved through soil tillage and hoeing.

Harvest and Storage Conditions

Pozantı strawberry is harvested in the early morning hours, when the fruit has reached ¾ of its red coloration. It is collected with its stem intact in small, food-safe containers for market distribution. Harvest frequency is 1–2 times per week.

Storage operations must be conducted in dry, cool, and odor-free environments. For long-term storage, a cold chain is required. The product is marketed in bulk or packaged form, with labeling information compliant with food regulations.

Monitoring Mechanism

The geographical indication compliance of Pozantı strawberry is monitored at least once annually. Monitoring is carried out by a minimum three-member board composed of representatives from the Pozantı Municipality, Pozantı Chamber of Agriculture, and Pozantı District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry. Additional inspections are conducted if deemed necessary or upon complaint.

During inspections, adherence to production methods, harvest and storage conditions, use of the origin emblem, and product quality are verified. Findings are documented and submitted to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. Expert institutions may be consulted when necessary.
