Released in 2005, Aşk ve Gurur (Pride and Prejudice) is an adaptation of the 1813 novel of the same name by British author Jane Austen and directed by Joe Wright. Film explores the lives and marital prospects of the five Bennet sisters in late 18th-century rural England while revealing tensions between individual Erdem and social building. This adaptation distinguishes itself from earlier versions through its minimalist storytelling and visual aesthetics.
The Bennet family consists of five young daughters and their ambitious yet distant father who desires suitable marriages for his children. The arrival of Mr Bingley, a wealthy and unmarried lord, sparks a romance with the eldest daughter Jane. Elizabeth, however, adopts a more independent stance than her family expects, and her turbulent relationship with the proud Mr Darcy becomes the film’s central narrative. Class differences, prejudices and character development shape the course of this relationship.
The film critiques the tight link between marriage and social class. Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship is repeatedly hindered by both their class disparity and personal prejudices. Yet Elizabeth’s self-confidence presents a strong challenge to the era’s aristocratic values.

Mrs Bennet is obsessed with securing appropriate marriages for her daughters. Her controlling nature and Mr Bennet’s passivity influence the children’s behavior. This situation is particularly evident in Lydia’s reckless actions.
The character of Elizabeth Bennet is portrayed in opposition to the traditional female roles of her time. Her expectations from marriage extend beyond economic security to include love, respect and equality. In this regard, she becomes a pivotal figure for feminist interpretations.
Despite being Wright’s first long feature film, it received widespread acclaim. Deborah Moggach’s screenplay is notable for Osin’s cinematography and Dario Marianelli’s score. The costumes and natural locations accurately reflect the 18th-century atmosphere. Camera techniques immerse the viewer in the unfolding events.

The 2005 version of Aşk ve Pride was filmed across various historical and natural sites in England. Notable locations include Chatsworth House, Burghley House, Groombridge Place and Stamford, Lincolnshire. Director Wright opted for real locations over studio sets to capture the period’s atmosphere and enhance authenticity. Natural lighting was preferred wherever possible, lending a pastoral quality to the cinematography.
