Şimşek-2 Satellite Launch Vehicle

Şimşek-2 is a strategic space launch vehicle project developed by Türkiye’s rocket and missile systems manufacturer Roketsan using indigenous and national capabilities, designed to carry micro and nano satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Şimşek-2 is regarded as a turning point in Türkiye’s ability to launch its own satellites into space.

The Şimşek-2 project is one of the new systems introduced by Roketsan at the IDEF (International Defense Industry Fair) events. The project is fundamentally grounded in the goal of reducing Türkiye’s dependence on foreign entities in space activities and achieving “independent access to space.” This vehicle is designed as an advanced version of the previously developed Şimşek-1 platform, which had a capacity of 400 kg.

Şimşek-2 aims to provide an ideal launch solution for small-scale satellites intended for commercial, military, and scientific purposes. The project will enable Turkish universities, research centers, and technology companies to implement their own space projects at more affordable costs.

The publicly shared technical details of Şimşek-2 demonstrate its advanced position in launch vehicle technology:

• Type: Micro and nano satellite launch vehicle.
• Capacity: Capable of carrying a payload of 1,500 kg (1.5 tons), representing a significant increase compared to the previous Şimşek-1 platform.
• Orbit: Designed to place satellites into a Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) above 700 kilometers. This orbit is highly strategic for observation and reconnaissance satellites.
• Structure: Features a two-stage rocket configuration.
• Propulsion System: Equipped with a liquid-fueled engine system. Liquid propulsion technology provides a critical advantage by enabling precise control of thrust, ensuring accurate placement of satellites into their target orbits.
• Dimensions: Approximately 40 meters in height, equivalent to the height of a typical 13- to 14-story apartment building.

The completion of the Şimşek-2 project is expected to provide Türkiye with significant advantages in both military and civilian domains:

• National Independence: Türkiye will be able to launch its own intelligence, communication, and reconnaissance satellites without relying on foreign countries or companies. This enhances national security.
• Economic Contribution: High costs currently spent on foreign launch services will be eliminated. In the future, Türkiye may generate new revenue by offering launch services to friendly and allied nations.
• Technological Advancement: Türkiye’s expertise and knowledge base in space technologies will expand, positioning the country more competitively within the international space community.
• Scientific Capacity: Universities and research institutions will be able to rapidly and flexibly deploy scientific experiments and technological prototypes into the space environment.

Şimşek-2 marks Türkiye’s effort to open a new chapter in its space journey and to join the limited group of nations capable of placing their own satellites into orbit. Roketsan plans to conduct the first launch test of Şimşek-1, the foundational platform of this project, in 2027.
