The Taurus Mountains, extending southward from Türkiye, constitute a major mountain system that plays a significant role in the geomorphological structure of the Anatolian Peninsula. Forming an extension of the Alpine–Himalayan orogenic belt, they were uplifted during the Alpine orogeny, which lasted from the Cretaceous to the Tertiary, as a result of the collision between the Anatolian and African plates.

The highest elevations of the Taurus Mountains are formed by peaks such as Demirkazık (3,756 m) in the Aladağlar. Rivers originating from these mountains—including the Seyhan, Ceyhan, and Göksu—cut through deep valleys to reach the Mediterranean Sea. These mountains separate the Mediterranean coastal strip from the Central Anatolian Plateau and possess notable features in both physical

The landscape varies from karstic dolines to cirque lakes, and from moraines to high glacial traces, supporting a rich flora and fauna. In this region, situated at the intersection of the Iran-Turan and Eastern Mediterranean floristic zones, 418 Iran-Turan, 296 Mediterranean, 13 Euxin and 764 multi-regional taxa have been identified; two plant species, Thalaspi rosulare and Verbascum adenocaulon, are classified as “critically endangered.” Additionally, many species such as the wild goat, bezoar goat, black vulture and golden eagle can be observed in protected areas including the Kapuzbaşı Waterfalls. Within the park, designated camping areas are located near the villages of Çukurbağ and Demirkazık, and water sources are potable without requiring treatment.

Climbing and Nature Sports

The Aladağlar and the Taurus Mountains in general are among Turkey’s most important mountaineering and climbing destinations. Peaks such as Demirkazık, Kızılkaya and Vayvay Tepe are preferred for technical climbs. The area is also heavily used for hiking, camping and photography. The Aladağlar offer potential for karstic cave exploration; although underground cavities in karstic areas marked by dolines and lapies have not yet been fully surveyed, speleological activities can still be conducted.
