The story is set in a small, close-knit town in Denmark. Lucas, a kindergarten teacher, is struggling to regain custody of his son following a divorce, while gradually rebuilding his social life. His life takes a dramatic turn when Klara, a young girl at the daycare where he works, makes a misguided statement that leads to Lucas being accused of pedophilia.
Although the allegation is based on a misunderstanding, Klara’s words are taken seriously by her family and the kindergarten staff, ultimately escalating into an official investigation. Rumors quickly spread throughout the town, deeply affecting Lucas’s social standing, relationships, and psychological well-being.
The film examines the transformation of an individual under the weight of collective suspicion, highlighting how a child’s perception can be shaped by external influences, and how a single personal statement can evolve into a collectively accepted “truth.” Public opinion about Lucas’s guilt or innocence forms independently of judicial proceedings. The narrative portrays the roles of institutions such as schools, families, and churches, and the difficulties they face in balancing decision-making with the protection of individual rights.
The film explores the tension between individual rights and the moral reflexes of modern society. It portrays how accusations of misconduct extend beyond legal processes to shape collective memory and social dynamics. Characters driven by a protective instinct activate informal mechanisms of social punishment, independent of judicial outcomes. This creates a conflict between personal reputation and the community’s sense of security.
The narrative also highlights the fragile boundary between childhood imagination and adult reality. Klara’s inability to clearly distinguish between fantasy and truth, combined with adults’ uncritical acceptance of her statements, illustrates how misunderstandings can escalate within both institutional and communal settings. The concept of “guilt” is depicted as being influenced by misinformation, miscommunication, and emotional panic, raising questions about the vulnerability of individuals in the face of collective judgment.

Lucas’s close friend Theo is played by Thomas Bo Larsen, while the child actress Annika Wedderkopp takes on the pivotal role of Klara. The acting style avoids theatrical exaggeration, instead emphasizing realism and naturalism to maintain the film’s dramatic integrity.
