TUSAŞ Super Lightning

Süper Şimşek is a modular unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system developed indigenously by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), capable of performing missions at high subsonic speeds. Initially designed as a "target aircraft" for training and testing air defense systems, the platform has evolved into a multirole operational system through the integration of capabilities in munition carriage, electronic warfare, and swarm technology.

Süper Şimşek is a high-performance platform capable of reaching a maximum speed of 0.85 Mach and operating at a service ceiling of 35,000 feet. The physical and operational data of the system are summarized in the table below:^【1】

Süper Şimşek is capable of carrying various types of payloads on a single platform. This flexibility enables its use across diverse mission profiles:

Air Defense Deception and Suppression: Through active and passive radar cross-section (RCS) enhancement systems, the vehicle can generate radar signatures resembling those of combat aircraft. This capability is used to mislead and expose enemy air defense systems.

Electronic Warfare: Equipped with onboard electronic attack (jammer) and electronic support systems, it can perform signal disruption and intelligence gathering missions.

Kamikaze Mission: With integrable 50 kg warheads and various seeker head options, it can be converted into a precision strike kamikaze munition.

Target Aircraft: Functions as a high-speed target for testing, training, and live-fire exercises of air defense systems.

Süper Şimşek can be launched via two primary methods depending on operational requirements:

Air Launch: It is released from underwing pylons of primary carrier platforms such as ANKA, AKSUNGUR, and ANKA III, after which it initiates autonomous flight.

Ground Launch: It can be fired from ground-based launchers using RATO (Rocket-Assisted Take-Off) systems without requiring a runway.

After completing its mission or during test operations, it is equipped with parachute recovery capability.

The system features full autonomous flight, encrypted digital data recording, and in-flight mission reprogramming capabilities. Compatible with AI-supported swarm UAV technology, Süper Şimşek can operate in coordinated formation with multiple platforms to penetrate complex defense networks.

According to SavunmaSanayiST, official announcements by the Ministry of National Defence (MND) confirm that the Süper Şimşek Tactical UAV System has been integrated into the inventory of the Turkish Air Force Command in various quantities and has entered operational service.^【3】
