Alacahan Caravanserai
Alacahan Caravanserai, in Alacahan Village, part of the Kangal district of Sivas, is a very ancient lodging facility. In the past, caravans—groups of merchants traveling together for trade—would rest here during long journeys. For this reason, such structures are called “kervansaray”.
Location
Caravanserai, the Alacahan Kervansarayı lies on the 100th kilometer of the Sivas–Malatya highway, along the historic Baghdad–İpek Road. This route was once one of the most important trade routes in the region. The Alacahan Kervansarayı was constructed along this road to provide merchants and travelers with a safe place to rest.
Architectural Features
The Alacahan Kervansarayı is a structure from the Seljuk period and follows the winter han type, meaning its roof is fully enclosed to protect against harsh winter conditions.
Inside the building, a long arched section known as a cradle vault runs down the center, with side halls on either side. The walls are constructed using an alternating pattern of black and white stones. This stone arrangement imparts a distinctive pattern and aesthetic beauty to the structure. The entrance is formed with a rounded arch. Since the interior does not receive natural daylight, small windows have been opened in the roof. The light entering through these windows gently illuminates the interior.

History and Significance
Although the exact date of construction is unknown, its architectural features clearly indicate that it belongs to the Anatolian Seljuk period. During this era, kervansarays were built to ensure the safety of trade routes and to provide free accommodation for travelers.
Conservation Status
Today, the Alacahan Kervansarayı is protected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Visitors can explore the structure, closely observing the stone wall patterns and the craftsmanship of Seljuk artisans. This historic building continues to be preserved as an important part of Türkiye’s cultural heritage.
