Alaeddin Keykubad: The Sultan Who Beautified Anatolia
Who Was Alaeddin Keykubad?
Alaeddin Keykubad was one of the most powerful and wisest sultans of the Anatolian Seljuk State. He ruled from 1220 to 1237. During his reign, peace, prosperity, and art flourished in Anatolia, and cities were beautified. He is popularly known as “Keykubad-i Azam,” meaning “The Great Keykubad.” He was successful in warfare and also a diligent leader who worked for the welfare of his people.
Peace and Development in Anatolia
During Alaeddin Keykubad’s time, roads, caravanserais, bridges, and fortresses were constructed. Thanks to these structures, people could travel more easily and trade flourished. Alanya Castle, Sinop Castle, and Kubadabad Palace were built during his reign. The sultan worked tirelessly to enhance Anatolia and ensure his people could live in peace and security.
The Sultan Who Supported Science and Art
Alaeddin Keykubad greatly admired scholars, poets, and artists. He invited them to his court, provided for their needs, and supported their research. During this period, madrasas (schools) were established and books were written. Thanks to him, education and science flourished in Anatolia.
A Brave and Intelligent Commander
Alaeddin Keykubad was not only an excellent administrator but also a courageous commander. He protected his people from major threats such as the Mongols and secured the safety of Anatolia. By conquering the Mediterranean coastlines, he established strong naval dominance. Thanks to him, Anatolia’s trade routes became safer.
Alaeddin Hill and Alaeddin Camii
Today, Alaeddin Hill in Konya bears his name. The Alaeddin Camii on the hill is one of the most beautiful structures of its era. The tombs of several sultans are also located there. Konya was the capital during his reign and experienced significant development.
