Where Is the Stone City Among the Clouds?
This remarkable structure lies on a cliffside overlooking the Göksu Valley along the Mersin-Karaman road. Built approximately 1500 years ago (around 440–442 AD), the monasteries showcase the craftsmanship of the people who lived during that era. The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi, upon seeing it, expressed his awe, describing it as if it had just been carved by a master’s hand, natural and magnificent.
What Is Inside?
Alahan Monastery is not a single building but a vast architectural complex. It contains two large churches, monk cells carved into the rock, a banquet hall, and tombs.
The architecture is so distinctive that it is said to share features with the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The craftsmanship is truly captivating. On the walls and doorways you can see intricate carvings of roaring lions, flying eagles, fish, and clusters of grapes.
The Enchanted Gate and Guardian Angels
One of the most striking features of the monastery is its western church entrance, known as the "Enchanted Gate". Above this gate, stone reliefs depict the archangels Gabriel and Michael.
These angels are shown crushing figures representing evil beneath their feet. This imagery conveyed to the people of that time the belief that “good will always triumph over evil,” and it was thought that the angels protected the monastery from malevolent forces.
A Journey Through Time
Therefore, 1500 years ago, during the early spread of Christianity, believers sought refuge in high and rugged caves like Alahan for safety. Alahan Monastery became one of these secure havens and soon evolved into a major pilgrimage site.
