Aşık Veysel: Master of Folk Songs That Touch the Heart
Aşık Veysel is one of the most beloved poets and ozans of Turkish folk literature. His real name is Veysel Şatıroğlu. He was born in 1894 in the village of Sivrialan, part of the Şarkışla district of Sivas. Despite losing his sight at a young age, he persistently and unwaveringly learned to play the saz and recite poetry. He dedicated his life to folk songs, human love, and nature.
The Great Determination of Young Veysel
At the age of seven, Aşık Veysel lost both eyes due to smallpox. Life was difficult for a child who could not see. But Veysel never gave up. His father gifted him a saz. This gift changed his life. He listened with his ears and learned with his heart. For days on end, he played the saz and recited poems.
The Poet Who Spoke with His Saz
Aşık Veysel drew his words from nature, love, peace, and the inner world of people. He sang his poems accompanied by the saz. One of his most famous poems is “Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım.” This poem conveys how swiftly life passes and how every human being is a traveler on this journey. Through his words, he inspired hope and encouraged reflection in others.
From Village to All of Türkiye
Over time, Aşık Veysel’s fame spread throughout Türkiye. He traveled from village to village, singing folk songs to the people. He also served at Village Institutes, teaching young people folk poetry, songs, and love. Though his eyes could not see, he was like a teacher who saw with his heart and inspired others.
A Soul Who Loved Nature
Aşık Veysel deeply loved nature. Mountains, flowers, trees, and mother earth became the subjects of his poems. In his poem “Benim Sadık Yarim Kara Topraktır,” he expressed his love for nature most beautifully. To him, humans are born from the earth, grow with the earth, and return to the earth.
The Legacy of Aşık Veysel
Aşık Veysel passed away in 1973, leaving behind an unforgettable life filled with timeless poems and songs. Today, his poems are read in schools and his songs are sung across the country. His home in Sivrialan has been turned into a museum. He continues to live in the hearts of Türkiye.
