Değirmen Çayı - Adıyaman
Değirmen Çayı is a stream and natural habitat located near the Besni district of Adıyaman. The stream is one of the primary sources from which Sofraz Çayı originates. Its crystal-clear, ice-like water flows through cracks in the rocks, bringing life to the surrounding landscape. This stream is not only a water source but also provides the local population with opportunities for relaxation and immersion in nature.
💧 Where Does It Begin and Where Does It Flow?
Değirmen Çayı originates at a place called "Sugözü" in the southern part of the Besni district — the point where underground water emerges to the surface. The word "göz" means the place where water surfaces. Have you ever considered how special the origin of a river is? Just as a baby’s birthplace marks the beginning of life, this stream marks the start of the water’s journey. The water that begins flowing from its source later merges with the waters of Tavaş and Çövenek to form Keysun Çayı, which eventually joins the Euphrates River.

🌳 What Kind of Nature Surrounds It?
The area around the stream is covered with steep cliffs, trees, and green spaces. Thanks to this natural setting, locals use the site as a recreational area for picnics and relaxation. Cooling off under the shade of trees and listening to the sound of flowing water is a peaceful experience for everyone. Sometimes you can also find caves along the banks of the stream. These caves may have once been inhabited by people in ancient times.
⛏️ Time Travel: Ancient Settlements
The Değirmen Çayı and its surrounding caves offer clues to very ancient periods. Researchers indicate that human settlement in the Besni region dates back approximately 5,000 years to the Paleolithic era (Old Stone Age). This means that thousands of years ago, people lived in the caves near this stream and relied on its water. Imagine: who was drinking from this stream 5,000 years ago?
🌾 Why Is It Important for Agriculture?
Streams and rivers are vital lifelines for the fields and vegetation in their surroundings. Değirmen Çayı, through its merger with Keysun Çayı, plays a key role in irrigating the plains around the Besni district. Irrigation is essential for crop growth and food production. By delivering the necessary water to farmland, rivers nourish the soil and support agriculture.
