The Thousand-Year Secrets of the Castle
Eğil Castle is not merely a structure of stone; it resembles a vast book written deep within history. Research indicates that this region has been home to numerous civilizations since 3500 BCE. The castle itself is believed to have been constructed during the Assyrian and Urartian periods. As you walk around its perimeter, you can discover hidden passages and tunnels descending into the earth. These tunnels allowed ancient inhabitants to exit the fortress discreetly during times of danger. Inside the castle, numerous rooms and storage areas have been carved directly into the rock.

The Footprints of the Assyrian Kings
One of the most fascinating aspects of this castle is the traces left by the Assyrian kings. On the western slope of the fortress, a carved royal figure and ancient inscriptions are etched into the rock. Scholars believe this relief depicts King Shalmaneser III of Assyria. The Assyrians were master stonemasons who carved magnificent cave tombs into massive boulders for their rulers. These tombs still stand firm around the castle today, continuing to tell the stories of the past.
⏳ A Journey Through Time
Eğil Castle has changed hands so many times over the centuries that it resembles a relay race of empires! First came the Romans, then the Abbasids, followed by the Seljuks, and finally the Ottomans. Each ruling people left their mark on the fortress—some added walls, others built mosques.
