Egyptian Pyramids
The Egyptian pyramids are large and awe-inspiring stone structures built for the pharaohs of ancient Egypt and are among the most famous and mysterious monuments in world history!
What Are These Pyramids?
Long ago in Egypt, kings known as pharaohs ruled the land. After their death, their bodies were specially preserved through mummification to prevent decay and buried within enormous stone structures. These massive constructions are the pyramids! Pyramids have a triangular shape and taper to a point at the top. The most famous of them are the Giza Pyramids near Cairo.

How Were They Built?
The pyramids were constructed thousands of years ago using stone tools, by stacking massive stone blocks on top of one another. At that time, cranes did not exist, but the Egyptians used their ingenuity to build ramps and pulley systems to position these enormous stones. The construction of the largest one, the Pyramid of Khufu, took approximately 20 years and required more than 2 million stone blocks, each weighing several tons!
Why Are They So Large?
The ancient Egyptians believed that their pharaohs were as powerful as gods. Therefore, they wished to bury them in grand and magnificent tombs. Additionally, the pyramid’s shape appeared to reach toward the sky, symbolizing a connection to the gods.
Is Khufu the Only One?
No! At Giza there are three great pyramids: Khufu, Khafré, and Mycerinus. Khufu is the largest. Alongside the pyramids, there are also smaller queens’ pyramids, temples, and colossal sphinx statues. The sphinx is a guardian statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human.
