Gölova Important Natural Area is a unique natural region located within the boundaries of Gölova district in eastern Sivas province, Türkiye. At the intersection of the Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and Central Anatolia regions, this area is home to a wide variety of plant, bird and fish species. Due to this rich biodiversity, Gölova has been designated an “International Important Natural Area”.
Geographical Location
Gölova is approximately 170 kilometres from the city centre of Sivas. Easily accessible by road, this region exhibits characteristics of a transitional climate, blending the wetter conditions of the Black Sea with the continental climate of Central Anatolia.
Ecosystem and Biodiversity
About 50 different plant species are found in this area. One of them is the Verbascum trichostylum, a mullein plant that grows only here. In Gölova’s wetlands, common pochards live. This duck species is among those globally threatened with extinction. Cranes once bred here; today they pass through the region during migration.
Lakes and Wetlands
Gölova contains important lakes such as the Dam Lake, Aşağı Tepecik Lake and Sütlü Lake. These lakes host numerous bird species including ducks, grebes, gulls, herons and wild geese. The lakes also contain fish species such as carp, mullet, silver fish and pike-perch.
