The history of Gümüşhane extends back to the 3000s BCE. The Hittites, Urartians, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines ruled these lands. The city derived its name from the rich silver mines extracted during the Ottoman period, combining the words “gümüş” (silver) and “hane” (house) to form “Gümüşhane”.
