From Winter Shelter to District
Kuluncak’s settlement history is not very old; it dates back approximately 100 to 120 years. The residents of the villages of Başören, Konaktepe and Karıncalık, who once lived in highland pastures, used this area as a shelter from the freezing winter cold.
Because it was close to water sources and nestled safely between mountains, they spent the winter here with their herds. Over time, this “winter shelter” became so beloved that people decided to settle here permanently, laying the foundations of Kuluncak.
From Kuytucak to Kuluncak
Have you ever wondered about the origin of the district’s name? Due to its geographical structure, Kuluncak is extremely secluded, meaning it is sheltered from the wind and hidden. For this reason, people originally called it "Kuytucak", meaning "secluded place".
As time passed, the word evolved through usage and eventually transformed into the name we know today: Kuluncak.
In the past, Kuluncak was briefly under the administration of Sivas province, later became a village of Darende, and on 20 May 1990, it officially gained district status and became part of Malatya.

Treasures Beneath and Above the Soil
Kuluncak is situated at an elevation of 1,270 meters above sea level, on mountainous and rugged terrain. Although its soil is somewhat limited for agriculture, the people turned this condition into an advantage through horticulture.
Do you know what lies beneath these mountains? Kuluncak’s soil is like a treasure chest! Deep within the mountains, valuable minerals such as iron, zinc, chromium and copper are found. In addition, the traditional craft of carpet weaving, which has deep roots in the district, has also flourished.
