Why Were They Built?
These monumental structures were constructed for the kings of Pontus who chose Amasya as their capital during the Hellenistic period. In ancient times, people built such monumental tombs to ensure that kings would be remembered after death. These tombs symbolized the power of the rulers and their devotion to the city.
Amasya served as the capital of this kingdom for exactly 276 years, from 302 BCE to 26 BCE. The kings wished to immortalize their names through these magnificent tombs built for them. Today, these tombs rank among Anatolia’s most impressive monuments.
How Were They Carved?
The tombs were carved vertically into hard limestone rocks, which required great skill to shape. Architects created deep U-shaped channels and galleries around the tombs to separate them from the main rock. Thanks to this technique, the tombs appeared like independent chambers within the cliff, resembling magnificent temples.
Artisans of that era worked for months, even years, using only hand tools to carve these vast chambers. The galleries cut into the rock divided the interior spaces, making the tombs appear even larger and more imposing. This technique is considered one of the finest examples of rock-cut tomb traditions worldwide.

Where Are They Located?
They are situated at the foot of Amasya Castle, on the southern slope of Harşena Mountain. You can reach the tombs by climbing the steep staircases that begin in the Hatuniye neighborhood to the north of the city and lead upward from the railway line. Once at the top, you can view the tombs up close and enjoy the panoramic view of the Yeşilırmak River.

The Mysterious Chambers of the Kings
In the Kızlar Sarayı area of Harşena Castle, five royal tombs are found, beginning with the founding king, Mithridates I Ktistes, and ending with Pharnaces I. These are the largest chambers, belonging to the most powerful kings of the dynasty. Each tomb carries the story and power of a different ruler into the present day.\"Royal Rock Tombs,\" Places to Visit, Turkey Culture Portal, accessed 16 April 2026,https://www.kulturportali.gov.tr/turkiye/amasya/gezilecekyer/kralkaya-mezarlari.

In total, 21 rock tombs of varying sizes are known to exist across the valley. However, the first five, belonging to the founding kings, stand out due to their size and craftsmanship. These chambers, where the kings slumbered eternally, seem to leap straight from the dusty pages of history.
⏳ A Journey Through Time:
The construction of these tombs dates back approximately 2,300 years, to 302 BCE. At that time, Amasya was the center of the powerful Kingdom of Pontus. For 276 years, as the capital of the kingdom, these tombs served as both fortress and symbol of royal authority.
