History
Behram Paşa Hanı was constructed in the second half of the 16th century by Behram Paşa as an urban caravanserai. Although originally built to house caravan travelers, its original foundation inscription has not survived to the present day.
During the reign of II. Abdülhamid between 1898 and 1899, the han was converted into the Süvari Askeri Kışlası (Cavalry Military Barracks). During the Republican period, it remained in use until 1976 under the Ministry of National Defense. In 1977 it was officially registered as a cultural heritage site requiring protection by the High Council for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
It was restored between 1978 and 1981 and subsequently leased out. In 2010 it was assigned to the Sivas Municipality under the “Restore, Operate, Transfer” model. Restoration was completed in 2018 and it was opened to the public as a boutique hotel, restaurant and café.
Architectural Features
- Plan and layout: The building is designed as a near-square rectangular structure with two stories and an open central courtyard.
- Facades and materials: The south facade is constructed of finely cut stone while the east, west and north facades are built of roughly hewn stone. Finely cut stone is also used in the courtyard and arcades.
- Entrances: There are three entrances: from the south, east and west. The main entrance is on the south facade and features a projecting eyvan with an ornate upper section, giving it a monumental appearance.
- Decorations: The pointed-arch entrance portal includes paired lion figures flanking the windows above the door and features low and high relief carvings on stone.
- Construction system: The building was constructed using the traditional Ottoman system of load-bearing walls, piers, arches, vaults and domes. The upper roof elements—including pointed and barrel vaults, cross vaults and domes—transmit the loads of the upper floor and roof to the ground.
