Surp Giragos Armenian Church
Diyarbakır’s narrow alleys may suddenly reveal a massive and magnificent structure. This is Armenian church, the largest in the Middle East: Surp Giragos! A remarkable place that children should explore, rich in history and story.
Where Is It Located?
Surp Giragos is located within Sur, the historic center of Diyarbakır. It is in Özdemir Mahallesi, just near the famous Şeyh Matar Camii. In the past, many Armenian families lived in this area, and this church was their most important gathering place.
What Kind of Structure Is It?
This church is truly enormous! Inside, there are seven different prayer niches (mihrabs), and the ceiling is made of wood. Its imposing architecture leaves visitors in awe. At one time, the interior was filled with gold and silver objects, but during difficult times, these items were sold to help those in need.
The Story of the Bell Tower
The church has a very tall bell tower. Although it was damaged during the First World War, it was later rebuilt faithfully to its original design. Today, this tower still rises toward the sky, forming part of the city’s silhouette.

Why Is It Important?
Surp Giragos is not merely a building—it is living history. It was completely destroyed in a major fire in 1881, but the community did not give up and rebuilt the church in 1883. Most recently, after a major restoration completed in 2022 (repairing the original structures), it reopened its doors to visitors once again.
A Journey Through Time
About 400 years ago, a Polish traveler named Simeon visited Diyarbakır. In his travelogue, describing the places he visited, he referred to Surp Giragos as a “magnificent and grand church.”
What Is Happening Today?
Today, Armenians from around the world gather annually for special services held here. Additionally, history enthusiasts and tourists come to Diyarbakır to see this vast stone structure and its serene atmosphere.
Surp Giragos Armenian Church stands in the heart of Diyarbakır as a monumental work that has endured for centuries, resisting fires and the wear of time. It is one of the most important symbols of this ancient city, where different cultures and faiths have coexisted.
