Tek Tek Mountains National Park
Tek Tek Dağları National Park is a unique place located in our city of Şanlıurfa, harboring both natural beauty and secrets spanning thousands of years. It is not merely composed of trees, flowers, and animals; it is also a living history book, bearing traces of people who lived in ancient times. As you walk through the park, you may feel as if you are traveling through a time machine.
This park demonstrates how vital it is to preserve both history and nature together. With its historical relics and living species, it is a treasure not only for our country but for the entire world. Let us explore together what lies within this fascinating park.
A Park Within History
The most distinguishing feature of Tek Tek Dağları National Park, setting it apart from other parks, is its preservation of ancient city ruins. These remnants tell us how people lived thousands of years ago, what they believed in, and what activities they pursued. As you wander through the park, it feels as if you are walking through an open-air museum.
One of the park’s most famous attractions is Şuayb Ancient City. This city was established during the Roman era, and its stone houses and wall remains offer clues about life in that period. Another significant site is Soğmatar Ruins, which served as a center where ancient people worshipped the planets and the Moon. This belief system is known as Paganism, and Soğmatar was one of its most important sites.
Our Plant and Animal Friends
Tek Tek Dağları is notable not only for its history but also for its rich vegetation and wildlife. The park serves as a safe haven for many different species. Protecting these creatures is one of the park’s most important responsibilities.
While walking through the park, you can see menengiç trees. Delicious coffee is made from the fruits of this tree. Additionally, unique plants such as the Şanlıurfa Prophet Flower, which grows only in this region, can be found here. These plants illustrate just how unique the park’s natural environment is.
Among the park’s inhabitants are deer, foxes, wild boars, and desert hares. In the sky, you can observe many bird species such as falcons, kestrels, and storks. This diversity of wildlife is evidence of the park’s healthy and balanced ecosystem.
A Journey Through Time
Let us travel back in time, approximately 12,000 years ago! At that time, humans had just begun practicing agriculture and were building their homes from earth and stone. One of the most important sites from this era is Karahantepe, located near Tek Tek Dağları National Park.
Like the famous Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe was a special gathering place where people held ceremonies. Archaeologists, scientists who study the past, discovered large T-shaped stone pillars here. These pillars were adorned with carvings of animals and humans, revealing how deeply the people of that era valued art and how they could achieve great things through collective effort. Karahantepe offers us a rare opportunity to read one of the earliest chapters in human history.
