What Is a Company?
The chocolate you bought from the corner store, the school bus you rode, or the TV show you watched at home—have you ever thought about how all of these came to be? Behind all these products and services are large groups of people who come together to form companies. A company is an arrangement in which one or more individuals combine their skills and capital (the money or assets needed to start a business) to achieve a common goal: to conduct business and earn profit.

How Are Companies Established?
To turn your business idea into reality, an idea alone is not enough—you need a plan. People come together, draft a contract that outlines how they will operate, and register this contract with the government’s official record known as the "Commercial Registry". After this step, the group gains a legal identity—a “legal person”—with its own name and the ability to make decisions independently, just like a human being.
What Are the Different Types of Companies?
Just as there are many kinds of businesses in the world, there are also many types of companies. The most common ones are:
Joint Stock Company
These companies are usually very large. The company’s capital is divided into small units called “shares.” Individuals can become owners by purchasing these shares. If the company incurs debt, shareholders are only liable up to the amount they invested.
Limited Company
This is the most common type of company in Türkiye. It can be established by at least one person, and the number of shareholders cannot exceed 50. Like joint stock companies, the liability of the shareholders is limited.
Personal Companies
These include types such as commandite and collective companies. In these companies, individuals who know each other well or family members typically join forces. The key difference here is that partners may sometimes be personally liable for the company’s debts with all of their assets.

A Journey Through Time
Let us now travel thousands of years into the past! Before the invention of money, people exchanged goods directly. As trade expanded over time, merchants who shipped goods across distant seas began forming partnerships to share risks. The foundation of today’s massive companies was laid when these bold merchants gathered and said, “Let’s do this business together.”
In Summary: Companies
Companies enable people to combine their strengths and accomplish large-scale tasks that would be impossible alone. Every toy produced, every computer game written, and every new medicine discovered reaches us because of this collaborative effort.
