What Is Coffee?
Coffee is one of the most beloved beverages in the world. It is made from the seeds of the coffee plant, which grows in tropical regions. The seeds are roasted, ground, and brewed with hot water to create this flavorful drink. People drink coffee in the morning for energy, to chat with friends, or simply for enjoyment.
Now let’s learn how coffee travels from the tree to your cup!

From Tree to Seed
Coffee grows on a plant known as the coffee tree. These trees thrive in warm climates, especially in South America, Africa, and Asia. The fruit of the coffee plant is called a coffee cherry. When ripe, coffee cherries turn red or purple. Inside each cherry are two coffee seeds.
Once the coffee cherries ripen, they are harvested. This process is sometimes done by hand and sometimes with machines. The best coffees are usually hand-picked because this method allows only the ripest cherries to be selected.

The seeds inside the harvested coffee cherries are separated. To do this, the outer skin of the cherries is removed. The seeds are then cleaned and dried. After this process, the green coffee seeds are ready.

Coffee seeds are raw when harvested and must be roasted. During roasting, the seeds are heated, bringing out the characteristic aroma and flavor of coffee. Different roast levels affect the taste. For example, a light roast produces a milder flavor, while a dark roast yields a stronger taste.

Roasted coffee seeds are ground to prepare them for brewing. The coarseness or fineness of the grind depends on the brewing method. For example, espresso requires finely ground coffee, while filter coffee uses a coarser grind.

The final step is preparing the coffee. Ground coffee is mixed with hot water, allowing its flavorful aromas to dissolve into the water. Different brewing methods include Turkish coffee, filter coffee, espresso, and French press.

Coffee is more than just a drink—it brings people together. Adults often enjoy conversations and relaxing moments while drinking coffee. If you ever want to try coffee, you can start with a gentle option like coffee with warm milk!
