What Is Statistics?
Statistics is a scientific discipline concerned with collecting, organizing, presenting data through graphs, and interpreting it. Sometimes, to answer a question, learning the opinion of just one person is not enough. To obtain more accurate and reliable information, we collect data from a group of people. This process is called statistics.
You can encounter statistics everywhere in daily life:
Finding out how many people live in a city.
Discovering which fruit is more popular.
Knowing the favorite subjects of students at school.
How Did Statistics Emerge?
The origin of statistics is rooted in the Latin word status, meaning condition or state.【1】 In 1748, the German scholar Gottfried Achenwall used the term “statistics” to describe the condition of states. In fact, the idea of gathering numerical information to gain knowledge dates back much further, to the Roman Empire, when censuses were already conducted.
Where Is Statistics Used?
Statistics is used not only in mathematics but in many other fields:
Social sciences: Research related to society.
Biology and medicine: Understanding the rate of disease spread.
Economics: Examining national income and expenditures.
Sports: Calculating success rates in matches.
The Statistical Research Process
There are four steps followed in conducting statistics:
1. Define the research question
For example: “What types of books should be added to our school library?”
2. Collect and prepare data for analysis
Gathering information through surveys, observations, or existing sources.
3. Visualize and summarize data
Presenting data using bar graphs, pie charts, or dot plots.
4. Interpret the results
Drawing conclusions from the data.
Time Travel
Two thousand years ago in Rome, censuses were conducted to determine how many people lived in the city. Today, institutions like TÜİK use modern tools to collect data for the same purpose.
