2026 European Modern Pentathlon Championships

The 2026 European Modern Pentathlon Championships was an international sporting event held in Istanbul, Türkiye, from 3 to 9 August 2026. Organized in cooperation between the European Confederation of Modern Pentathlon (ECMP) and the Turkish Modern Pentathlon Federation, the championship marked Türkiye’s first time hosting a European Championship in the senior category of modern pentathlon. The event brought together Europe’s leading pentathletes and served as a stage for individual and team competitions to determine the European champions.

A total of 153 elite athletes participated in the championship, comprising 67 women and 86 men from 22 different countries across Europe. The event featured two competitions: the ECMP Obstacle Course Laser Run European Championship and the ECMP Senior Pentathlon European Championship. The competitions included the disciplines of fencing, obstacle course, swimming and laser run. By its very nature, modern pentathlon demands a multifaceted set of skills from athletes including speed, endurance, concentration, strategic thinking and decision-making under pressure. During the championship, in addition to the athletes, officials from the European Confederation of Modern Pentathlon, international delegates, referees and media representatives were present and actively involved in the event venues.

The main competition venue for the championship was designated as the Burhan Felek Sports Complex located in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul. This modern facility has extensive experience hosting national and international sporting events and is also equipped with infrastructure to serve as the venue for the modern pentathlon competitions of the 2027 European Games.

The official accommodation center for the event was assigned to The Green Park Pendik Hotel & Convention Center. This facility provides modern accommodation, meeting rooms and a wellness center for athletes, coaches, officials and delegates. According to logistical planning, the distance between the official hotel and the Burhan Felek Sports Complex was measured at approximately 12 kilometers. Considering the transportation network, the hotel is approximately 10 kilometers from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and about 80 kilometers from Istanbul Airport.

To coordinate and meet the needs of delegations regarding accreditation, transportation, accommodation and general competition information, a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) office was established in the lobby of the official hotel. This office operated daily from 08:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 20:00 throughout the duration of the event. In addition, participants were introduced through the event guide to tourist and social areas within walking distance of the accommodation site such as Pendik Marina, as well as other nearby attractions including Viaport Marina, Pendik Sahil Park, Aydos Forest, the Princes’ Islands, Bağdat Avenue and the Historic Peninsula (Sultanahmet area).

The national team representing Türkiye as host nation consisted of 15 athletes: seven women and eight men.

• Female athletes competing for the national team are: İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu, Sıdal Aslan, Tulya Kesebir, Ebrar Çalışkan, Yaren Kalender, Tuana Özgür and Zeynep Ay.
• Male athletes representing Türkiye in the competition are: Buğra Ünal, Eren Kıvanç Taşyaran, Muhammed Emir Kurtulan, Jan Demir Vurdum, Arda Meriç, Ali Akaydın, Barış Doğu Çelik and Mehmet Doruk Özkan.

The Turkish national team delegation participated in both individual and team events with the goal of winning the European championship.

The most prominent athlete representing Türkiye at the championship and the one with the highest international expectations is national pentathlete İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu. The 29-year-old athlete aimed to win her first European championship title in Istanbul and competed with the goal of securing her third medal in European Championship history. Reviewing her past international achievements, it is evident that she won her first European medal, a bronze, in Bulgaria in 2016 and her second, also a bronze, in Belarus in 2017.

In terms of global statistics, she has recorded bronze medals at the 2022 World Championships in both the individual and mixed relay events. Additionally, she earned a silver medal at the 2023 World Cup Finals and a bronze medal at the 2024 World Cup Finals. Regarding her Olympic performances, she finished fifth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and sixth at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Serhat Aydın, President of the Turkish Modern Pentathlon Federation (TMPF), provided official assessments on the institutional and national significance of the championship. Aydın expressed institutional pride at Türkiye hosting, for the first time in its history, a European Championship in the senior category of modern pentathlon. He emphasized the importance of welcoming Europe’s elite pentathletes to Istanbul and highlighted that Turkish modern pentathlon is gaining international recognition and entering the ranks of globally influential nations, thereby underscoring the event’s major importance.

Official thanks were extended to Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Osman Aşkın Bak, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Hamza Yerlikaya, and Director General of Sports Services and President of the Turkish National Olympic Committee Prof. Dr. Veli Ozan Çakır for their administrative support in bringing the event to life. The official authorities anticipated that this seven-day event would host highly competitive competitions. It is also expected that the European Modern Pentathlon Championship will make a positive long-term contribution to Istanbul’s sports tourism and its capacity to host international events. It was noted that the Burhan Felek Sports Complex, which hosted the championship, will apply the infrastructure and experience gained during this event to the modern pentathlon competitions of the 2027 European Games.

On the first day of the 2026 European Modern Pentathlon Championship, flag races for women and men were held at the Burhan Felek Sports Complex. Athletes competed across the disciplines of fencing, obstacle course, swimming, and laser run, vying for the first medals of the event.

In the women’s flag race, Swiss siblings Katharina Jurt and Anna Jurt won the gold medal with a total of 1364 points. The Swiss team, distinguished by their performances in fencing and the laser run, was followed by Hungary’s Dorottya Orsolya Varga and Rajncsak Diana, who scored 1356 points. The bronze medal went to Russia’s Viktoriia Sazomova and Amina Tagirova, who accumulated 1332 points. The Turkish pair Tuana Özgür and Zeynep Ay finished in seventh place.

In the men’s flag race, the French duo Maire Emilien and Diego Lavillat, despite starting the final laser run discipline in second place, secured the European championship title with a total of 1517 points after an outstanding performance in the final leg. Lithuania’s Paulius Vagnorius and Jonas Kalaminskas earned silver with 1499 points, while the Czech pair Marek Gcyz and Matouš Tůma took bronze with 1489 points. The Turkish team of Arda Meriç and Ali Akaydın finished in tenth place.

After the first day, the standings in the women’s flag race were as follows: Switzerland, Hungary, Russia, Czechia, Belarus, Ukraine, Türkiye and Italy. In the men’s event, the top ten were France, Lithuania, Czechia, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Türkiye.

On the second day of the championship, women's qualification matches were held. A total of 60 athletes competed in two groups, A and B, at the Burhan Felek Sports Complex, with the top 18 finishers in each group advancing to the semifinals.

İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu, representing Türkiye, finished 7th in Group A with 1443 points to qualify for the semifinals. Sıdal Aslan, competing in Group B, secured 17th place with 1403 points and earned a semifinal berth.

By the end of day two, athletes from Belarus, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Türkiye and Ukraine had advanced to the women's semifinals. It was announced that following the day's program, the women's semifinal fencing rankings would be determined, followed by the men's qualification matches. The women's semifinal competitions were held on 6 August 2026.

On the fourth day of the championship, the women’s semifinal competitions took place. Athletes competed in swimming, obstacle course, fencing, and laser run disciplines at the Burhan Felek Sports Complex to secure a spot in the final. Representing Türkiye in Group A, İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu began the laser run stage in eighth position after completing the swimming, obstacle course, and fencing segments. With her performance in the laser run, the national athlete surpassed all competitors ahead of her and finished first in Group A, which included 18 athletes, thereby qualifying for the final.

İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu, who has won two bronze medals at the European Championships during her career, earned the right to compete for a medal in the women’s final on 8 August 2026 with this result. Thus, she became the first athlete to reach the final in the women’s category representing Türkiye.

Following the competitions, İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu stated that the semifinal stage involved high stress and expressed her happiness at qualifying for the final. The national athlete noted that the qualification rounds had been challenging for her but added that the pressure had eased since securing her place in the final. She emphasized her goal to give her best performance in the final and fight for a podium finish.

Serhat Aydın, President of the Turkish Modern Pentathlon Federation, stated in his assessment that İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu delivered the expected performance and advanced to the final. Aydın highlighted that despite the hot weather conditions, the athlete maintained her performance level and expressed confidence that she would represent Türkiye excellently in the final. With the conclusion of day four, the athletes competing in the women’s final were confirmed, and the championship moved into the final races following the completion of the semifinals.

On the sixth day of the championship, the women’s individual final competitions were held. At the Burhan Felek Sports Complex, 18 athletes competed for the European title in fencing, obstacle course, swimming, and laser run disciplines.

İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu, representing Türkiye, scored 244 points in fencing, 348 in obstacle course, 287 in swimming, and 614 in laser run, accumulating a total of 1493 points. With this result, the national athlete became the European champion in the women’s individual category. Anastasiya Arol of Belarus won silver with 1488 points, and Blanka Guzi of Hungary took bronze with 1485 points.

İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu, who previously won bronze medals at the 2016 and 2017 European Championships, achieved her first individual European title with this result in Istanbul. This achievement also marked Türkiye’s first European championship in modern pentathlon.

In the women’s team ranking, Hungary, composed of Blanka Guzi, Blanka Bauer and Rita Erdos, finished first with 4360 points. Switzerland won silver with 4355 points, and Belarus took bronze with 4313 points. The Turkish women’s team, consisting of İlke Özyüksel Mihrioğlu, Sıdal Aslan and Zeynep Ay, scored 4242 points and placed sixth.

On the final day of the 2026 European Modern Pentathlon Championships held in Istanbul, the mixed relay final took place. In the final competition at the Burhan Felek Sports Complex, teams of two athletes each from 13 countries competed. In the mixed relay final, nations raced in pairs consisting of one female and one male athlete for the last medals of the championship.

Hungary, represented by the pair Mihaly Koleszar and Balkan Guzi, won the final competition. With this first-place finish, Hungary claimed the gold medal and became European champions. Russia, represented by the pair Andey Bobrov and Yana Soloveva, won the silver medal, while Great Britain, represented by the pair Ross Charlton and Emma Whitaker, won the bronze medal.

Turkey competed in the mixed relay final with the pair Sıdal Aslan and Buğra Ünal. The Turkish team finished in seventh place. With the completion of the mixed relay final, the 2026 European Modern Pentathlon Championships held in Istanbul came to an end.
