The 2026 Mediterranean Games will be the 20th edition of the Mediterranean Games, to be held in the city of Taranto, located in the Puglia region of Italy, from 21 August to 3 September 2026. Organized every four years by the International Mediterranean Games Committee (CIJM/ICMG), it is a multi-sport event bringing together athletes from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea or member states of the committee. The official slogan of Taranto 2026 has been set as “Embrace the Future”. A total of 3,854 athletes from 26 National Olympic Committees are expected to participate. The opening and closing ceremonies will take place at the Stadio Erasmo Iacovone in Taranto.

History

Origin of the Idea and the First Games

The idea of organizing the Mediterranean Games emerged during the 1948 Olympic Games in London. Mohamed Taher Pasha, President of the Egyptian Olympic Committee and Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), presented to IOC members the concept of a multi-sport event bringing together countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea at regular intervals, with the support of Greek IOC member Ioannis Ketseas. This proposal quickly gained support and, after a preparatory phase, the first Mediterranean Games were held in 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt. Ten countries sent 734 athletes to compete in 13 sports disciplines.

Institutional Development

As the event grew, its institutional structure strengthened. During the 1955 Games in Barcelona, a supervisory board was established to oversee the organization of the Games. This body became the official governing authority of the event in 1961 under the name International Mediterranean Games Committee (CIJM – Comité International des Jeux Méditerranéens). Female athletes participated for the first time at the 1967 Games held in Tunisia.

Calendar Changes

The schedule of the Mediterranean Games has changed over the years. The first 11 editions were held one year before the Summer Olympic Games. Due to the increasing congestion of the international sports calendar in the year preceding the Olympics, at the request of most National Olympic Committees, the Mediterranean Games were moved to the year following the Olympic Games starting in 1993. This change was first implemented in 1993 in France, just two years after the 1991 Athens Games. Today, the Games continue to be held every four years.

Host Countries

To date, the Mediterranean Games have been hosted by 12 different countries. Türkiye has hosted the event twice: in İzmir in 1971 and in Mersin in 2013. In 2026, the hosting flag will pass to Italy for the third time, with the Games taking place in Taranto. Kosovo will host the 2030 Mediterranean Games, making it the first host country in the event’s history without a Mediterranean coastline.

The mission of the Games is to unite the peoples of the Mediterranean through sport, promoting peace and friendship. The organization offers an opportunity to highlight the rich cultural heritage and diversity of the Mediterranean region and aims to leave a lasting legacy for the city of Taranto and the Puglia region. Additionally, it seeks to inspire passion for sport among younger generations and to establish sport as a way of life.

Visual Identity

Logo ve renkler (TA2026)

The Taranto 2026 logo draws inspiration from Taranto’s millennia-old history and its connection to the sea. Two “X” letters, representing the number 20 in Roman numerals, symbolize the 20th edition of the Games and evoke the lines of the city’s iconic sailor monument. The two interlocking “X” letters represent unity among the diverse cultures of the Mediterranean, emphasizing values of peace and solidarity with a forward-looking perspective.

The logo’s color palette consists of blue and red tones inspired by the city’s identity. Blue represents the sea, a fundamental element of Taranto’s identity, evoking values such as calm, serenity, and infinity that are important both in sport and in life. Red symbolizes passion, energy, and vitality, expressing the competitive spirit and strength of the athletes. The combination of vibrant and varied colors creates a dynamic and cheerful visual identity reflecting the multicultural essence of the Mediterranean Games.

Maskot (TA)

The mascot of the Games, Ionios, is a friendly and charming character designed to embody the joy, unity, and connection to the sea represented by the Mediterranean Games.

Participating Countries and Athletes

Twenty-six countries that are members of the International Mediterranean Games Committee will participate in the 2026 Mediterranean Games. The participating nations come from three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa. The majority are states bordering the Mediterranean Sea, but some countries without a Mediterranean coastline, such as Portugal, Andorra, San Marino, and Kosovo, are also eligible to participate under the committee’s membership structure. Kosovo was admitted to the International Mediterranean Games Committee in 2015 and made its debut at the 2018 Tarragona Mediterranean Games.

Italian Delegation

The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has selected a team of 498 athletes for the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games, comprising 259 men and 239 women. This delegation forms one of the most balanced and largest teams Italy has ever sent to the Games. Alessio Palombi will serve as Head of Mission. The Italian flag at the opening ceremony will be carried by Irma Testa, an Olympic bronze medalist in boxing, and Filippo Tortu, an Olympic gold medalist in the 4x100 meter relay.

The Italian team includes five Olympic gold medalists: Gianmarco Tamberi and Filippo Tortu in athletics, Mauro Nespoli in archery, Diana Bacosi and Gabriele Rossetti in shooting. They are joined by seven other Olympic medalists: Angela Andreoli in artistic gymnastics, Abraham De Jesus Conyedo Ruano in wrestling, Irma Testa in boxing, Francesca Palumbo in fencing, and Federico Nilo Maldini, Paolo Monna, and Silvana Maria Stanco in shooting.

The largest discipline in the Italian delegation is athletics, with a team of 82 athletes (41 women and 41 men). The Turkish National Olympic Committee (TMOK) will participate in the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games with a total of 335 athletes, including 137 women and 198 men. Turkish athletes will compete in all sports on the program except handball.

The opponents and groups for the Turkish Women’s and Men’s National Volleyball Teams at the 2026 Mediterranean Games have been determined. The Women’s National Volleyball Team will compete in Group B against Greece, Algeria, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. The Men’s National Volleyball Team will face Spain, Greece, Egypt, and Kosovo in Group B.

Türkiye has participated continuously in the Mediterranean Games since the inaugural edition in 1951. With a total of 966 medals—386 gold, 265 silver, and 315 bronze—Türkiye ranks third in the overall medal table, behind Italy and France. Wrestling is by far the most successful discipline for Türkiye, with 260 medals, followed by weightlifting with 167 medals, athletics with 108 medals, and boxing with 95 medals.

Türkiye has hosted the Mediterranean Games twice. The first was the VI Mediterranean Games held in İzmir in October 1971, with 1,362 athletes from 14 countries participating. Türkiye won 18 gold, 12 silver, and 15 bronze medals, finishing in fourth place. The second was the XVII Mediterranean Games held in Mersin in June 2013, with 3,064 athletes from 24 countries. Türkiye achieved its most successful performance in the history of the Games, winning 47 gold, 43 silver, and 36 bronze medals, and finishing second in the overall ranking.

Vatican Participation

Four athletes from the Vatican’s sports association, Athletica Vaticana, will participate in the Mediterranean Games for the second consecutive time since the Oran 2022 Games. Fabrizio Peloni and Tiziano Lucarelli in men’s padel doubles, Daniele Fontana in fencing epee, and Emiliano Morbidelli in cycling will represent the Vatican in Taranto. Athletica Vaticana’s participation is made possible with the approval of all participating countries.

Sports Program

The official sports program of the 2026 Mediterranean Games consists largely of Olympic disciplines. Alongside traditional sports such as athletics, swimming, wrestling, boxing, and volleyball, the program includes recently growing sports such as padel, triathlon, skateboarding, and roller marathon, updated periodically within the event’s framework.

Official Sports Disciplines

The official sports disciplines at the 2026 Mediterranean Games are: 3x3 basketball, archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, badminton, bocce, boxing, canoe/kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, finswimming, football, handball, judo, karate, padel, rhythmic gymnastics, roller marathon, rowing, sailing, skateboarding, shooting (pistol and rifle), shooting (trap and skeet), swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Demonstration Sports

One of the notable innovations in the 2026 program is the inclusion of demonstration sports. The disciplines of Baseball5 and Kickboxing, which are not part of the official medal program, will be held for promotional purposes within the framework of the Games. Demonstration sports are considered for potential inclusion in future official Mediterranean Games programs if they gain international interest.

Baseball5 is a modern, faster, more accessible, and urban-friendly version of traditional baseball. Played without bats or gloves, using only a rubber ball, two teams of five players each compete on a small field. The ball is hit with the hand, and due to short match durations, the game maintains a high pace. Notable for its mixed-gender format, where men and women compete on the same team, Baseball5 is widely played in schools, cities, and community organizations because it requires no expensive equipment or large facilities.

Kickboxing is a combat sport that combines boxing techniques with kicking techniques from Eastern martial arts such as karate and Muay Thai. Athletes in the ring use punches and kicks within specific rules to strike their opponents, testing speed, strength, and strategy. Originating in the 1970s from the fusion of Western boxing and martial arts, kickboxing has rapidly spread worldwide as both a competitive sport and a fitness discipline.

Team Sports

Five team sports are featured in the 2026 program: football, volleyball, 3x3 basketball, handball, and water polo, which will be contested only in a men’s tournament. These disciplines will be held across four different provinces of the Puglia region. Football matches will take place in stadiums located in Taranto, Brindisi, Francavilla Fontana, and Lecce, with the finals held at the Stadio Iacovone. 3x3 basketball competitions will be held at the Peripato Gardens, and water polo matches will follow swimming events at the Torre d’Ayala Stadium. Volleyball tournaments will be hosted in three major cities: Taranto (Palamazzola), Brindisi (PalaPentassuglia), and Lecce (PalaVentura). The handball tournament will be held in Conversano and Fasano.

Competition Venues and Infrastructure

The Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games adopt a regional and sustainable organizational model based on upgrading and modernizing existing infrastructure. In addition to Taranto, 14 other cities in the Puglia region will host official competitions and events. The Organizing Committee works in close collaboration with the Italian Government, the Puglia Region, local authorities, and sports federations to ensure governance, transparency, and timely implementation.

The Games’ infrastructure plan includes significant investments in sports facilities, transportation, and urban regeneration. Every project, from the new Maritime Center over Mar Piccolo to the Stadio Erasmo Iacovone and from the Sports Quadrangle to the waterfront (Lungomare), has been designed to meet international standards and remain usable after the event.

Legacy and Sustainability

The legacy targeted by Taranto 2026 is structured around three pillars: economic and employment gains and new professional opportunities; development of sports facilities and promotion of sports participation; and cultural and social benefits including strengthening the Mediterranean identity and involving schools in the process. The organization is grounded in environmental, social, and economic sustainability principles. These include prioritizing the use of existing or renovated infrastructure to reduce environmental impact, promoting sustainable transportation, and involving local communities in the process.

Preparation Process

Countdown Clock

Geri sayım saati (AA)

On 22 August 2025, exactly 365 days before the start of the Games, a countdown clock was inaugurated in front of the Taranto City Hall. The ceremony was attended by Special Commissioner and Organizing Committee President Massimo Ferrarese, International Mediterranean Games Committee President Davide Tizzano, and Mayor of Taranto Piero Bitetti. Ferrarese noted that 41 construction sites and 21 municipalities are involved in the Games’ preparation and that the entire process will be completed within approximately two and a half years since the Games were awarded to Italy. Tizzano emphasized that the countdown clock is a symbolic landmark marking the final phase of preparations and highlighted that the Mediterranean Games unite 26 countries and three continents under the banner of sport, culture, and friendship.

“Embrace the Future” Light Installation

Exactly 50 days before the opening ceremony, on 2 July 2026, a light installation bearing the slogan “EMBRACE THE FUTURE” was activated on the Ponte Girevole (Swing Bridge), Taranto’s iconic symbol. Installed overnight and visible from midnight until 4:00 a.m., the installation will accompany the bridge’s silhouette until mid-September. The letters, made of aluminum and polycarbonate and illuminated by LED lights, were designed through a collaboration between Taranto-born interior architect and designer Claudia Pignatale and Edoardo Giammarioli. Production was carried out by the Rome-based company BOTW, with technical support from the Italian Navy and the Municipality of Taranto.

Religious and Diplomatic Dimension

Pope Leo XIV shared a message regarding the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games during his Angelus address from Castel Gandolfo on 16 August 2026. The Pope noted that the Games would bring together various countries from Africa, Asia, and Europe belonging to the Mediterranean region, and expressed his hope that this sporting event would serve as a prophecy of peace and brotherhood for the peoples of the region and the entire world.

Italian Minister of Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi, in a statement made five days before the opening ceremony, said he had received a valuable message from the Pope and expressed his hope that it would contribute to peace. Abodi emphasized that thanks to a three-year collaborative effort coordinated by the Italian government, sport will once again place the world at its center, and that the Games will offer significant opportunities for the peoples of the Mediterranean and valuable openings for international relations and diplomacy.

The Vatican’s sports association, Athletica Vaticana, will participate with four athletes. On the first day of the Games, Taranto’s Archbishop Ciro Miniero, together with Bishop Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, will lead a ceremony at the city’s cathedral and welcome the “Cross of the Athletes.” This cross, as it has been in international sporting events since the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, will remain as a spiritual reference point in the cathedral throughout the Games. Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, stated that the presence of Athletica Vaticana at the Games is an important gesture of brotherhood.
