2027 Spanish Super Cup

2027 Supercopa de España (Spanish: Supercopa de España 2027) is the 38th edition of the Supercopa tournament organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). It has been announced that the tournament will take place between 2 and 7 February 2027 at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Türkiye. The competition will be held in a Final Four format, featuring FC Barcelona, the 2025-26 La Liga champion; Real Madrid CF, the La Liga runner-up; Real Sociedad de Fútbol, the Copa del Rey champion; and Club Atlético de Madrid, the Copa del Rey runner-up.

Since 2020, the Supercopa de España has been regularly held in Saudi Arabia. However, because Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the AFC Asian Cup from 7 January to 5 February 2027, and these dates conflict with the Supercopa calendar, it became necessary to stage the 2027 edition in another country. The RFEF evaluated seven different host proposals from around the world.

Qatar was briefly considered a strong alternative, but the final decision was made in favor of Istanbul. The Egyptian Football Association also engaged in official discussions with the RFEF and submitted a bid to host the tournament in Cairo. China, the United States and Mexico were among the other countries that formally offered to host.

After negotiations and evaluations, the RFEF decided that the 2027 edition will be held in Istanbul. The tournament will return to Saudi Arabia starting in 2028. The RFEF’s hosting agreement with Saudi Arabia is valued at approximately 51 million euros (59.6 million dollars) annually, depending on participating clubs, and remains valid until 2029 or 2030. Of the last seven editions held since 2020, six have taken place in Saudi Arabia, with the sole exception being the 2021 edition, which was held at the La Cartuja Stadium in Seville, Spain, due to travel restrictions.

Traditionally, the Supercopa was a two-legged tie contested at the start of the season between the La Liga champion and the Copa del Rey champion. A major format change transformed it into a Final Four structure. With this new format, the tournament was moved to January or February, acquiring the identity of an international mini-tournament.

The process of moving the competition outside Spain became systematic starting in 2020. Six of the last seven Supercopa editions held between 2020 and 2026 took place within Saudi Arabia’s borders. The only exception was the 2021 edition, which could not be held in Saudi Arabia due to global travel restrictions and health protocols implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, it was played at the La Cartuja Stadium in Seville, Spain.

The current hosting agreement between Saudi Arabia and the RFEF offers flexibility based on participating clubs and covers the period until 2029 or 2030. It has been officially confirmed that following the temporary relocation to Istanbul in 2027, the tournament will return to Saudi Arabia for its next edition in 2028.

All matches of the 2027 Supercopa de España will be played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, which has a capacity of 77,000 spectators. This stadium previously hosted the UEFA Champions League finals in 2005 between Liverpool and AC Milan, and in 2023 between Manchester City and Inter Milan.

The commercial rights and local promotional activities for the tournament will be managed by a specialized company coordinating with the Spanish and Turkish football federations. The RFEF aims to preserve the international brand value of the tournament and its economic contribution to Spanish football through this selection. Revenues generated from the Supercopa are directly distributed to approximately 1,000 amateur and professional clubs across both men’s and women’s categories within the Spanish football pyramid. The tournament will be broadcast live in more than 150 countries worldwide.

This edition of the tournament, to be held in Istanbul, will be sponsored under the "Riyadh Season" brand with the approval of Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia. This sponsorship and organization process is being carried out under a joint agreement between the RFEF and Sela, in collaboration with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF). Sela has maintained its partnership with the RFEF since the Supercopa began being held in Saudi Arabia. In a social media post, Turki Al-Sheikh thanked Bilal Erdoğan for his contributions in making it possible for the Supercopa to be hosted in Türkiye.

In organizing the event, the RFEF collaborates with SELA, a company with which it has long partnered in the development and operational management of the tournament. SELA has been one of the primary stakeholders in the commercial and logistical management of the competition since it began being held in Saudi Arabia.

The organization process in Türkiye will be implemented under a bilateral cooperation framework between the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) and the RFEF, alongside specific agreements with Sela. A specialized company has been authorized to manage the promotion, ticketing and local commercial rights for the event at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. The 2027 Supercopa will have extensive global reach and will be broadcast live to football fans in more than 150 countries via television channels and digital platforms.

The tournament holds strategic importance for the economic sustainability and revenue distribution of Spanish football. Revenues generated from the Supercopa, organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), are designed to fund the entire Spanish football pyramid. Official statements confirm that financial benefits from the tournament are directly distributed to approximately 1,000 amateur and professional clubs across both men’s and women’s categories throughout Spain.

The economic gains from hosting the tournament outside Spain play a significant role in the RFEF’s budget planning. The long-term agreement signed by the RFEF to host the Supercopa in Saudi Arabia guarantees an annual revenue of approximately 51 million euros (59.6 million dollars), depending on the nature and sporting achievements of participating clubs. A key criterion during the temporary relocation of the 2027 edition to Istanbul was ensuring the continuity of this financial sustainability and preventing any disruption in the flow of revenues to Spanish clubs.

Under the Final Four format, the matchups are determined by pairing the Copa del Rey champion with the La Liga runner-up, and the La Liga champion with the Copa del Rey runner-up. Accordingly, the semi-final fixtures are as follows:

• FC Barcelona - Club Atlético de Madrid: FC Barcelona, the 2025-26 La Liga champion and reigning Supercopa winner, will face Club Atlético de Madrid, the Copa del Rey runner-up.
• Real Sociedad de Fútbol - Real Madrid CF: Copa del Rey champion Real Sociedad de Fútbol will compete against La Liga runner-up Real Madrid CF.

The exact dates and kickoff times for the semi-final matches have not yet been announced by the federation. The winners of the semi-finals will meet in the final.

FC Barcelona won the last two Supercopa tournaments held in 2025 and 2026. In both tournaments, Barcelona defeated Athletic Club in the semi-finals and Real Madrid in the final. Under the management of Hansi Flick, the club aims to win the trophy for the third consecutive time. If both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona win their respective semi-finals, it will mark the first time that Real Madrid’s manager José Mourinho and FC Barcelona’s manager Hansi Flick face each other in an official match, potentially setting up a "El Clásico" final.

The relocation of the Supercopa de España outside Spain and its hosting in Saudi Arabia has drawn criticism. Prior to the 2025-26 tournament, Athletic Club player Inaki Williams stated that the current arrangement is negative for players and fans^【1】. Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s human rights record has been questioned, and the Spanish football fans’ association highlighted security concerns for female fans after reports emerged that partners of Mallorca players were harassed during the Supercopa matches in Jeddah^【2】.
