About the Author: Oktay Rifat

Oktay Rifat (1914–1988) was one of the pioneers of Republican-era Turkish poetry and a founding figure of the Garip movement. He graduated from Ankara University’s Faculty of Letters and the School of Political Sciences in Paris. With the Garip movement, he wrote poems grounded in everyday life and colloquial expression; in later periods, he turned toward more symbolic and abstract narratives exploring the inner world of the individual, time and existence. He also produced works in Theater, novel and essay genres. His poetic evolution transformed him into a multifaceted literary figure who was not merely a member of a single movement but played an active role in the transformation of Turkish poetry.
