The Abyssinian cat is one of the oldest breeds of cats. Although it takes its name from Abyssinia, the former name of Ethiopia, where its first specimens were brought to England, genetic studies show that its origin lies in Southeast Asia and the coasts of the Indian Ocean. This indicates that the Abyssinian cat historically spread to different regions via sea routes. Although it is thought to be connected to Egyptian cats, modern genetic data do not support this connection. Its modern form was developed in England in the 19th century and was officially recognized in the United Kingdom in 1929. It is currently a widely kept cat breed.
