The Funeral Ceremony of Adem Yavuz(Adem Yavuz İlkokulu)
Adem Yavuz (1943–1974) was a Turkish journalist and war correspondent. Throughout his career, he worked for various national press organizations; during his coverage of the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974, he was captured and died from wounds sustained in an armed attack.【1】
Adem Yavuz was born in 1943 in the village of Çınarlı, district of Hafik, province of Sivas. His father’s name was Osman and his mother’s name was Elif. He completed his primary education in his birthplace, Çınarlı, before moving to Istanbul for secondary and high school.
He pursued higher education at Ankara University (Faculty of Social Sciences). During his studies, he turned toward journalism and began working as an Ankara correspondent for the newspaper Günaydın while still a student.【2】
He began his professional career as an Ankara correspondent for Günaydın newspaper during his student years. In 1967, he passed the examinations conducted by TRT and was appointed to a television programming position. After graduating in 1970, he completed his military service as a reserve officer in Kadirli, Adana.
Upon returning from military service, he applied to resume his position at TRT, but his application was rejected due to a negative security investigation report citing his membership in DEV-GENÇ and his role as a founding member of the Intellectual Clubs Federation. On 1 September 1969, he transferred to ANKA Agency and continued his career there. He was a candidate for the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the 1973 general elections for a parliamentary seat from Sivas but failed to win the primary election.【3】 【4】
Yavuz was part of the second group of journalists sent to Cyprus to cover the second phase of the Cyprus Peace Operation. On 14 August 1974, he and fellow journalists Ergin Konuksever and Cengiz Kapkın set out toward Famagusta to follow the advance units of the operation.【5】
On their return journey, their vehicle, bearing license plate CF 736, came under fire from Greek Cypriot forces in the Küçük Kaymaklı region. The driver was killed, and Yavuz and the other journalists were taken prisoner. During transport in the back of a pickup truck with their eyes and hands bound, Yavuz was shot at close range in the abdominal area by a Greek National Guard soldier using an automatic weapon.【6】 【7】
Initial treatment was provided at a hospital in Cyprus, where he remained under care for one week. Due to the severity of his condition, Yavuz was repatriated to Türkiye and transferred to Adana Faculty of Medicine Hospital for advanced examination and treatment. Despite medical interventions, his condition deteriorated and he died on 26 August 1974 at the age of 31. He is recorded as the only journalist to have lost his life on duty during the Cyprus Peace Operation.【8】
After his death, his body was brought to Ankara, where a formal ceremony was held in front of the General Directorate of Press and Information. A funeral prayer was then conducted at Maltepe Mosque.
In accordance with his will, his body was transported to Çınarlı village in Hafik district of Sivas, his birthplace, and buried in a monument tomb constructed by the Istanbul Journalists Association. Between 1976 and 2013, a ferry operated by Istanbul City Lines was named in his honor. Numerous schools, streets, neighborhoods, and public institutions across Türkiye have also been named after him. Official commemorative ceremonies are held annually at his grave.
