Adnan Menderes Democracy Museum

Adnan Menderes Democracy Museum is an interactive museum that presents the life, political struggle, and place in Türkiye’s democratic history of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, a pivotal figure in Türkiye Republic’s transition to multi-party politics, through contemporary museum practices.

It is located in the Çakırbeyli Village of Koçarlı District in Aydın Province, on the very land where Menderes was born and raised. The museum was constructed between 2019 and 2020 under the directive of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and under the patronage of the Aydın Governorate.

Architectural and Design Features

The museum building is designed as a replica of the Hacı Ali Konak, the ancestral home of Adnan Menderes’ grandfather. Spanning approximately 800 m², it consists of a basement, ground floor, and upper floor. Designed according to contemporary museum principles, the building engages visitors through sensory, interactive and pedagogical elements. The entrance to the structure begins with a wooden pergola featuring a “menderes” pattern, a reference to Menderes’ surname. The museum presents a seamless organic connection between interior and exterior spaces to its visitors.

Exhibition Content and Thematic Sections

The museum chronologically and thematically covers a broad time span, from Menderes’ childhood through his political career, his tenure as Prime Minister, the 27 May 1960 military coup, and its aftermath:

Independence Medal Section

The first section visitors encounter features a crescent installation composed of 850 crystals, referencing Menderes’ role in the War of Independence, alongside a replica of the Independence Medal with Red Stripe.

Adnan Section

This section details Menderes’ family background, childhood, education (Neighborhood School, İttihat ve Terakki Preparatory School, Kızılçullu American College), and military service. The museum’s narrative emotionally conveys the lasting impact of losing his mother, father and sister at a young age due to tuberculosis, as well as the profound influence of his grandmother Fitnat Hanım.

Menderes and Politics

Menderes’ political career, which began in 1930 with the Free Republican Party, culminated in the founding of the Democrat Party in 1946 and its electoral victory in 1950. This period is explored in a dedicated section of the museum under the slogan “The Word is the People’s.” Additionally, reforms, investments, and industrial initiatives undertaken between 1950 and 1960 are presented to visitors through models, maps and documents.

27 May and the Judicial Process

One of the museum’s most striking sections addresses Menderes’ removal from power by the 27 May 1960 coup and his subsequent trial on Yassıada. Rather than justifying the coup, this section employs the museum’s narrative to critique the suspension of democracy and places the pursuit of historical justice at its center.

Objects and Collections

The museum houses a rich collection including the tractor purchased by Adnan Menderes in 1954, the official vehicle he used during the 1950s, personal belongings, family letters, engagement rings, original documents and rare photographs. The basement level also contains a digital library open to academic research and a multipurpose hall.

The museum also functions as an active educational space, offering workshops and seminars for students and researchers. Projects such as “Honoring Adnan Menderes: Human Rights and Democracy Education,” developed in collaboration with schools, exemplify these educational services.
