Arcane (series)

Arcane (original title: Arcane: League of Legends) is an animated series produced in collaboration by Riot Games and Fortiche Production, and released on Netflix between 2021 and 2024. The series is based on the popular video game League of Legends and is set in the fictional twin cities of Piltover and Zaun. It explores the growing conflict between Piltover, a city driven by technological advancement, and Zaun, an underground metropolis struggling to survive in poverty, while telling the dramatic story of two sisters, Vi and Jinx, caught between these two worlds.

The series has received positive acclaim from both audiences and critics since its first season, drawing attention for its striking visual style, deep character development, and original storytelling.

Plot and Themes

Arcane is set in the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun. Piltover is known as a center of science and progress, while Zaun is an underground city battling poverty and crime. The series depicts the social and political tensions between these two cities, the escalating conflicts triggered by the emergence of Hextech magic technology, and how the paths of two sisters, Vi and Jinx, diverge within this environment.

The thematic foundation of the series extends beyond personal conflicts to address broader structural issues such as political corruption, ethical dilemmas, class division, and the control of science and magic. Each character represents different layers of the social system, while universal themes like siblinghood, loyalty, justice, revenge, and individual freedom are explored through a dramatic narrative aesthetic. In this way, Arcane moves beyond the classic “good versus evil” narrative to offer viewers a multi-layered ethical and psychological analysis.

Cast and Characters

• Vi – Hailee Steinfeld: Vi is a strong-willed, protective, and determined street fighter raised in Zaun. She plays a central role in the tragic transformation of her younger sister, Powder (Jinx). As she confronts the injustice between Piltover and Zaun, she also grapples with her own past.

• Jinx (Powder) – Ella Purnell: Powder, Vi’s younger sister, becomes Jinx after a series of tragic events, transforming into an unstable and anarchic character. Emotional breakdown, feelings of abandonment, and guilt shape her destructive nature. Jinx lies at the heart of the series’ dramatic core.

• Jayce Talis – Kevin Alejandro: Jayce, a rising scientist and political figure in Piltover, plays a pioneering role in the development of Hextech technology. Throughout the series, Jayce struggles with the tension between his scientific ideals and his political responsibilities, confronting the ethical boundaries of technology.

• Caitlyn Kiramman – Katie Leung: Caitlyn, from one of Piltover’s elite families, stands out for her pursuit of justice. She collaborates with Vi to combat corruption in the city and develops a strong bond with her.

• Silco – Jason Spisak: A charismatic and dangerous figure who holds power over Zaun’s underworld. He adopts Jinx as his own daughter and fights for Zaun’s independence as a revolutionary leader. His complex moral structure elevates him beyond the role of a simple “villain.”

• Viktor – Harry Lloyd: Viktor, Jayce’s partner, is a scientist who pushes the limits of Hextech to overcome his own physical limitations and advance humanity. When his scientific passion clashes with ethical concerns, his character undergoes a tragic transformation.

Production

Arcane was developed in collaboration between video game giant Riot Games and the French animation studio Fortiche Production. The production process lasted approximately six years and employed an innovative fusion of traditional 3D animation and hand-drawn visual techniques. This unique aesthetic brought the series close to cinematic visual quality.

Produced by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, both long-standing members of the creative team behind League of Legends, the series features music that seamlessly integrates with its atmosphere, through collaborations with artists such as Imagine Dragons and Woodkid. The first season, released on Netflix in 2021, achieved great success and quickly became one of the most-watched productions globally.

Series Performance

Arcane became Netflix’s most-watched series in its first week across 38 countries. It also entered Netflix’s Top 10 lists in 87 countries. The series garnered significant interest on China’s Tencent Video platform, reaching 130 million views.

The Arcane series has received widespread recognition at national and international award ceremonies between 2021 and 2024. To date, it has won a total of 28 awards and received 10 nominations across different categories.
