Ardeşen is a coastal district of province located in the Black Sea Region. Situated at the point where the Fırtına Stream flows into, it attracts attention with its nature, cultural richness, and developing economy. Known as “Art’asheni” in Laz, Ardeşen means “high settlement”.

History
The history of Ardeşen extends to ancient times. It is known that Colchis, Lazica, Rome, and the Trabzon Empire successively ruled the region. Ardeşen, which came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in 1461, gained district status in 1953. The district's name is derived from the Laz word “Art’asheni”, meaning “high settlement”.
Geography and Climate
Ardeşen is located on the Black Sea coast, at the foot of the Kaçkar Mountains. The district has an area of 743 km², with an average altitude of 27 meters above sea level. The region has a typical Black Sea climate; it receives abundant rainfall throughout the year and has high humidity. This provides favorable conditions for tea cultivation.
Population and Demography
According to 2021 data, the population of Ardeşen is 30,645. Various ethnic groups, primarily Laz and Hemşin communities, live in the district. A large part of the population resides in rural areas, and the traditional lifestyle still maintains its influence.
Economy
Ardeşen's economy is mainly based on agriculture, services, and small-scale industry sectors. Tea cultivation is the most important economic activity in the district and supports other sectors in the region. Seasonal employment increases during tea harvesting periods, and related sectors such as transportation are revitalized. Also, industries based on forest products play a significant role in the district.
Tourism, Culture and Cuisine
Ardeşen has great potential for tourism due to its natural beauty and cultural richness. The Fırtına Stream offers an ideal environment for nature sports such as rafting, while the Kaçkar Mountains and plateaus are suitable for trekking and hiking. In addition, the traditional “Formulaz” wooden car races held in Tunca town are among the cultural events of the region. Ardeşen cuisine features the typical flavors of the Black Sea; local dishes such as muhlama, hamsili pilav, and minci stand out.
